No DX12 for you (W7 users)

AMD has seemingly given us the first details on which operating systems DirectX 12 will be compatible with, or rather, the OS it won't work on.

At a recent PDXLAN event, the company's chief gaming scientist, Richard Huddy spoke about Windows 7, commenting "One thing that's not going to happen to it is DX12, yup, DX12 is not coming to Windows 7."

Microsoft has stated that DirectX 12 can double the framerate and cut power consumption requirements of systems using it by half. The feature will ship with Windows 10, which is set for release next year, and will also be compatible with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, as well as Xbox One.

It kinda sucks to say it plainly but what you say is correct, Windows 7 has shifted into extended support (no new features) and since DX12 releases next year, several months after that fact, no one can really complain. Even though they will.

I don't think anyone will mind. The direction Win 10 is headed in will drive upgrades, especially with anyone who actually knows what DX12 is and wants to use it.

Considering the newest 11.x isn't even in 7, its not really a surprise.  They added parts of it via the WDDM upgrade but its not fully the same 11.2 or whatever its up to @ W8.1.

Either way, it was probably expected. I guess that means Windows 10 should be the new benchmark come next year. Kinda looking forward to it!

DXDIAG in windows 8.1 just says DirectX 11 , no modifiers after it or anything.  Does anyone know what the actual DX version is installed on windows 8.1 ?

11.2, but many NVIDIA cards are only 11.

Not surprised by the news.  DirectX as it seems are tied to the core of the OS.  If and when Microsoft set a certain deadline on that OS core, that OS will not get the new DirectX.  It's been like that long time ago.
