Steam Crash Build 9879

Recommended Posts

I recently updated to build 9879 and now during Dota 2 games steam is crashing with the following error:

Now at first I thought it was just my PC but my friend updated to 9879 today and started getting the same issue.

Anyway, I don't think anyone here has a solution (maybe you do) but my question is how can I submit this application error to Microsoft? I've tried poking around the event viewer and the feedback app but there doesn't seem to be a way to report a specific issue like this. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I haven't tried Dota 2 but I've run into a lot of issues with Build 9879. One of my Steam games got stuck in a loop where it would repeatedly ask which version of the game I wanted to load (regular or touch enabled). I've also had issues with SLI, the nVidia Control Panel, Explorer crashing, display flickering and a Windows Update that prevented my computer from even booting.

Basically the latest preview build is a trainwreck. The only thing I can suggest is revalidating your install, as that fixed the issues I had with one of my games.

I would say it's steams issue and probably not so likely Microsoft. Sending a report probably won't do anything.

I mean you're right it's probably an issue with the way steam handles something that's changed in the new build but I'd rather make sure both parties know of the issue and fix it moving forward.

If it crashed with the standard "X has stopped working" dialog then it should send the crash data at some point automatically. After it goes through the "checking for a solution" phase it queues the report if there is no known fix found.

I wanted to follow up and say I am having this issue as well. The same issue is in the Windows Feedback app with 3 upvotes, but neither has a solution to fix it until we get a real fix from either Valve or Microsoft. My thoughts are:

  • Downgrade to Build 9860 (if that's possible).
  • Find another app that reopens the Steam process when Steam dies.
  • Switch to the Steam beta channel and hope a fix comes out.
  • Use a virtual machine to play games (not crazy for less intensive games).

If anyone has a better suggestion (or a solution similar to the second point) I'm all ears.

Install Steam on a more stable OS? Otherwise, you'll have to bite the bullet on this one. There isn't really much you can do with a OS that really isn't supported yet by either party.

Fwiw I fixed this issue by deleting the faulting steamservice.exe. It doesn't appear to have any effect on playing any games aside from them no longer crashing. I still do wish there was a way to directly report these issues though.

Thank you for the suggestion, that does seem to help. It looks like SteamService.exe is used for games that hook into Steam during runtime (i.e. for multiplayer). So while this fixes most games, some remain mostly unplayable.

I haven't had any problems with Steam with the latest preview download. I play on line about 4 to 5 hours a day, I'm retired. I play Advanced Warfare and never have a bit of trouble.

I started having the same issue as these guys... the only game I am playing is Advanced warefare and was wondering what may be different between our setups so maybe I could narrow down this problem.
