DVD/CD Disks

Recommended Posts

I know what some of you say, just use pen drives, and I do. But If I need to give something away to a family member or a friend, I aint giving them pen drives.

However, I am low on DVD/CD discs. I can do with just DVD's. But I'm a bit out of the loop here. I'm looking for 100-disc sets. If I remember correctly, JVC Taiyo Yuden were good. Or should I just get the best deal, as in, they're all the same?

your giving them away right.. Whatever is cheapest is what I would say, and if you need to give something to someone. Why not ask them for their pen drive, or say I need this drive back, etc.

I can not remember the last time I did anything on optical media, other then burn a DR copy of pictures/home movies to have my son store at his house.

Shoot most the time if you gave someone a cd/dvd now - they wouldn't know what to do with it. Most new systems do not come with optical drives.

Put the file up on dropbox, or whatever cloud you use and share it to them, etc..

What's wrong with pendrives? I always keep several cheap ones (3$-4$) around. Buying CDs, jewel cases and keeping them around for years just so I can pass out a few files once in a while? Not worth it.

I have some of these.

They work great, plus they have a great top for writing on

Most of my friends are of older people that have crap old systems. And just go on the internet for their email. They won't know how to go on dropbox. Nor would they have a spare pen drive. "What's a pen drive?"

I have 100-pack of slim jewel cases that are in my computer drawer. I have about 90 left... I have the resources, except for DVDs.

Edit: Bud, are those quality pen drives? I've gotten a few "cheap" ones like that. They didn't boot, or they were encrypted or some mombo jumbo...

I have just put that 8GB ones on my wishlist, next time I do a amazon order will grab them, they get lots of reviews and at 4 stars, but sure some say some are dead. And not the fastest things out there, etc.. ;)

If your dealing with non tech people, then ok dvd/cd might be easier for them... Get whatever is cheapest - prob get some good deals for black friday, cyber monday. Non techie people still have old hardware, etc.. Just got a laptop for older user.. They couldn't give me good reason or the last time they used it, etc. But they needed a cd burner ;) So I got her an external for $30.. I doubt she has used it, and has had the new system for like 6 months already. $30 down the drain because she doesn't know what a pen/flash/usb drive is ;)

I can let you know when I get them how they work out, plan on juts throwing a few in my bag and draw at home and work, etc.. Will test them all out though.

micro center always has Verbatim for sale -- to look for Taiyo Yuden to give away.... silly, they sure as hell wont appreciate it.

Why wouldn't they? They probably don't know the difference :P

I always buy cheap DVD/CDs.  Find them all pretty much the same.  Isnt like it was when they were first released.

And if you want to give stuff to family/friends....just put it online and have them download the info.  They they can choose what media to put it on if they want.

Back to the dropbox stuff, even non computer users can follow a link, when you share something on dropbox you get a link. You email it too them and they download it, etc.

Now if they are still on dialup you might have some issues ;)

Using dropbox as just example, any of the cloud services allow you to share file with a link, you don't have to install any software to be able to share files, etc.

"That link doesn't have a virus does it? I'm not going to download it because I'm scared..." It happens...

But yeah, I'll remember that...

Yeah these people shouldn't be running your dvd either ;) What if there is a virus on it.. I would hope you would of sent them that link with a few personal words, saying hey here is that something we were talking about that you needed, grab the file do 1, 2, 3, etc..

And not just sending them a link without any description of what it is, etc.. I wouldn't download it either if just got some random out of the blue link to something.

DVDs will be around a long time.

Windows OS comes on a DVD.  Motherboards have drivers on CD/DVD.  Video cards have a CD/DVD.

Saving personal files to a DVD is far more reliable than the 'cloud' or usb/flash drives.

For sharing small files, several MBs, just ZIP it, and e-mail it to them.

DVDs will be around a long time says you? Machines don't even come with them any more ;)

People are migrating to tables and such, no optical disks. You go to dell and order some laptop, doesn't come with optical. The apple laptops don't come with them anymore, etc. etc..

You can hold on to you OLD ways all you want, but other than DR with something like the mdisc I really don't see them being of much use these days.

But as I said - going to be some deails, etc. Here over at newegg

Seems like a good price for 100x of them.. Pick up 2 and should be set for quite some time.
