Far Cry 4 users accidentally reveal they pirated the game

Recommended Posts

Far Cry 4's director has announced anyone complaining the PC version of the game doesn't contain field of view (FOV) options are in fact revealing they pirated the game.

Taking to Twitter, Alex Hutchinson explained that as legitimate copies of the game will connect to the internet and receive the feature via Day One patch, those complaining that no such feature is present are outing themselves as having illegal copies.

"PC players!" he begins, "If you're online complaining about the lack of FOV control ... You pirated the game."

Complaints about the issue are rife, from Reddit to Twitter, though such high numbers probably don't surprise the company too much. Way back in August 2012, the company's CEO Yves Guillemot claimed between 93 and 95 percent of PC gamers pirate some their games (though Ubisoft later clarified that this applied only to certain popular franchises in some territories).

Despite a rocky launch, Far Cry 4 has stabilised enough for us to finish our review of the ambitious title, so be sure to check out our verdict.

I kind of like when devs do stuff like this.

Good. I despise people pirating and then complaining if said game doesn't work. You didn't pay for the game so don't complain about something that you stole.

It's a fantastic game and well worth the money. I was glad by how well it runs on PC. Super smooth on ultra.

Was it Alan Wake that had something like this where the main character wore an eye patch that couldn't be removed? Not sure if that's the right game, but I remember reading about that thinking it was hilarious.

Neat, and an application of the Day One Patch that I can get behind. It's not there because they rushed the game to production (well, it may be but not for this particular bit) but as a countermeasure. (Y)

People on PC Gamer's Facebook page moaned a lot about this - but then again, most of them moan about everything :P (in-between posting replies containing "PC master race!")

They shouldn't get too excited. I saw the update already cracked days ago.

Isn't really news though, this happens with most games that have day one patches.

If they really want to be clever, they should do what Crytek did with Crysis 2 and make features in the game acts up, such as the body suit in the game not work properly in the pirated versions (distorted HUD, and energy losses)... which seems to be uncrackable and is far more obvious and intentional.

While this is funny, it's not the first time games have used such anti-piracy features (or at least very similar features). Just goes to show how stupid some people who pirate games are...if you pirate the game you need to be smart enough to not complain about what you didn't pay for...

Developers need to grow up and spend cycles improving the game instead of having these petty things. Chances are that people who were able to pirate the game can also obtain a cracked version of Day One patch where this feature is unlocked. It's a temporary charade to make people at Ubisoft feel good about themselves while they bask in the glory of public self-shaming. Is it a valuable enough feature to convert pirates into legit customers? No, so there is no point doing it.

Best part is, I paid for my copy and had to wait 24 hours after it was released to get it to unlock, due to a glitch in the UPlay client not unlocking it. It was causing the same problems for countless others, while everyone who pirated it was already playing 3 days before it came out.

But they didn't have FoV options!

That is until the day one patch was cracked as well.

Serious Sam 3 -  You meet a unkillable scorpion, that most will think is just a hard boss, and will spend days trying to kill :)

Like many people that pirated Windows and complained into infinity about the OS?

Yeah great and all, but people who legit bought the game but then used a cracked exe to try to get the game to work also saw this issue. And seemingly people who didn't even use a cracked exe but bought the game also saw no FOV slider, so, ok.

I'm still waiting for the patch that let's me play the god damn game. Really ###### about this as this was one of the games I was highly anticipating.
