Woman Steals Car, Unintentionally Levels a Building

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A vehicle being chased by police slammed into a downtown Kansas City building where vintage cars were being stored Thursday, causing the structure to partially collapse and sending at least one vehicle plummeting to the ground from the second floor.

Police Capt. Chris Sicoli told KSHB-TV the white SUV was reportedly stolen. Police spotted it earlier in the day, but a chase wasn't authorized until a detective saw the vehicle run a stop sign downtown while going 80 mph, Sicoli said.

Cynthia Bell of Kansas City told The Associated Press she was driving when she saw the chase. She said the driver of the SUV was talking on a cellphone when she tried to turn a corner and plowed into the old brick building.

"It sounded like a bomb," Bell said. "If it could shake the ground, it would have. It was like slow motion."

Sicoli said the SUV's driver was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was hurt. The SUV also hit a fire hydrant before hitting the corner of the building six blocks away.

The Police Department's media unit did not return multiple phone messages left by the AP.

Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief James Garrett said engineers were on the scene to assess the damage. He wasn't sure how long the well-traveled street in front of the building would be closed.

Imagine explaining this to your insurance company for a claim... "yes hello insurance, I'd like to report a claim... you won't believe what just happened, a building just jumped out of me from nowhere"

That's ######! She didn't Level the entire building, looks like just the middle the rest is still standing.

If all it took to level an entire building was a car crashing into it, a whole bunch of retirement communities would be rubble.

Anyone else wondering why the police had to wait for a traffic violation to pursue a stolen vehicle that they knew was stolen?

Most likely, they keep track of it as it rolls though the city and recover at a later time.  No sense in causing a high speed chase over a stolen car.

However, the traffic violation was going though a stop sign at 80MPH so she was already doing a high speed chase, by herself.
