AC Unity Season Pass Cancelled, Ubi offers free game instead

Recommended Posts

The launch of Assassin?s Creed Unity was a highly-anticipated moment for me and for our development teams around the world who dedicated a tremendous amount of energy, passion and skill to the game?s creation. For us, it was the culmination of years of work on new technologies, the development of multiple innovations -- including an all-new game engine -- and an evolution of the Assassin?s Creed franchise?s core pillars. More importantly, we know that it was a highly-anticipated moment for many of you as well, as you looked forward to taking part in the first truly next generation Assassin?s Creed game.

Unfortunately, at launch, the overall quality of the game was diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues. I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin's Creed team. These problems took away from your enjoyment of the game, and kept many of you from experiencing the game at its fullest potential.

We?ve been working hard to fix the problems players are reporting, and the patches we have released so far have resolved many of them. Today, we?re releasing our third patch, which fixes a variety of specific issues related to the game?s stability and performance, matchmaking and connectivity, gameplay and menus. You can find the release notes on that patch here: Patch 3 Notes

To show our appreciation for your continued support, we?re making the upcoming Assassin?s Creed Unity Dead Kings DLC free for everyone. For Season Pass holders, we will also offer the choice of one additional game from a selection of Ubisoft titles for free. More details on the offer for Season Pass holders can be found here: AC Unity FAQ

In addition to the latest patch and this offer, we are committed to delivering further fixes for other issues you?ve raised. In the meantime, please keep your feedback coming ? it has been both humbling and incredibly helpful as we continue working hard to improve the overall quality of the game. We are hopeful that with these forthcoming updates, everyone will be able to truly enjoy their Assassin?s Creed Unity experience.

We will continue striving to make Assassin?s Creed one of the most ambitious and innovative franchises on the market, and we thank you for your continued loyalty and support.

Sincerely,

Yannis Mallat

CEO, Ubisoft Montreal & Toronto

Or they could have offered refunds?

Games in question:

If you purchased the Season Pass or Assassin?s Creed Unity Gold Edition (which includes the Season Pass), you are eligible to choose one free game from among a select list of Ubisoft titles.* These are:

  • The Crew
  • Far Cry 4
  • Watch Dogs
  • Assassin?s Creed Black Flag
  • Rayman Legends
  • Just Dance 2015

Well on the plus side, the games being offered are reasonably recent.

Although I don't see where it says that the season pass has been cancelled, just that the first DLC will be free for everyone and if you have a season pass then you get a free game. Then again, I've always been confused by the term, "season pass" so maybe I've misunderstood its point.

Yeah there where some serious issues with the game at launch and these issues where even worse on PC and I'm a PC gamer. TotalBiscuit even made a video on how poorly the have was running at launch.

The next time game companies start talking about how $60 is not enough for a AAA game just laugh at them. They want more money but produce products that are not ready for launch and have to patch them.

I should ask for a raise at work but not put any effort to deserve a raise.

Ok, Are they not developing these games, and testing them, on up to date hardware, with all the latest patches on them?  Are they developing these titles on apples, pc's or special development systems?   Why is there so much headaches with brand new, fresh releases?

I think a big issues is the mass porting to the different platforms (windows, apple, ps3/ps4, xbox 360/xbox one), they need to have the consoles updated and testing them on these machines before release I believe, not on closed systems.  I mean get with it people.

It only the first two weeks for many of these hot titles, and its make or break with the profits in the first 3 months, so patch it and get it right. just make sure that the hacked/pirated copies don't get the patches, because they don't deserve them.

Are these free games digital or disc?

I highly doubt they'd send you the disc.

Most DLC is rubbish and I think creating season passes was a cynical way for publishers to make money from gamers whether or not they wanted DLC.

Yeah people are impaitient and I'm guilty as well lol. Recent example is The Evil Within which released last month and is now $20 during the Steam sale. If the majority of gamers just waited these developers and publishers wouldn't get away with raising prices and releasing an inferior, buggy, unstable games. They can get them on the cheap from reasonable B&M shops selling PC games, Amazon and Steam sales. I've learned my lesson so if there is an upcoming Steam sale I'm waiting, if not I'll wait anyway, that's money I can save for bills and other luxuries. I might, that's a big if pre-order and buy on release day if it's confirmed to be GOTY material and wait for reviews in regards to port quality.

The Crew, Rayman, or Far Cry might be adequate compensation imo

Not The Crew! Have you tried the open beta recently? It's pretty bad

Ok, Rayman or Far Cry then

(no, I hadn't tried it, I didn't even realise I had missed it :/)

The beta is running until the 28th so try it out.

Kind of gutted that the season pass has been cancelled. From the video they released it would have been a good one to have. I guess they need to focus on fixing the game first and felt they couldn't do both.

Hoping they release the side scrolling AC separately, that looked really good.

As someone mentioned earlier - last question here

Although the sale of the Season Pass has been cancelled, those who have it will still get the content it seems.

So if I went and bought Unity tomorrow, would I still be entitled to a free game?

Edit

I didn't read it correctly, so I guess I would only get free dlc?

The Gold Edition is still widely available.

If you already bought the season pass, you'll still get all the content, including the sidescroller.

I love that a publisher has finally had the guts to stand up and admit they have not done a good enough job and not only offer the content that was going to be paid for, for free. They are also giving those who paid for the DLC compensation.

Given the amount of games that are being released broken these days, I really hope that this is a start of these publishers changing their methods and getting games out of the door working.
