Monitor going to sleep?

Recommended Posts

Hey.

My mother-in-law is having a weird problem what I haven't seen yet. Her monitor is going to sleep at random times and it doesn't come up after that. First it was when I tried to install W8 on her pc, first time at 70% it went to sleep and never came back up, so I started again, it installed fine and ran about 3-4 minutes and again it went to sleep and never came back up, hard reset tried Ubuntu Live CD - it works for a while and guess what again monitor is going to sleep for no apparent reason. I can't even run an HDD diagnostics because I can't make it that far before the monitor shutting down.

Is it in the HDD or Graphics?

The setup is some pre-built Athlon 5000+  (No idea on gfx card tho as it has absolutely no indications on it... o.O)

Tried a different monitor?  If laptop, try an external display?

I have had monitors do the same thing you are describing.  Normally means the monitor is going bad.  So good to test another monitor, if possible, and an external monitor if it is a laptop.

If  it is a laptop, check the power settings and adjust the settings as the way she wants then save it. It can be turn off if she wants to.

Check the battery status, it could be the problem since it is on low or not plugged, the monitor will go to sleep.

If not working, then get a replacement battery and place it in...

Was thinking that but seems to be happening at random intervals.  Normally if it was the power settings set incorrectly, monitor would should of at consistent intervals.  Unless something else is happening like you stated with the battery.

I had that problem with my laptop...  I got a replacement battery... it works fine since. And it still works to this day.

Oh I agreed it could be that if it is a laptop...just meant that the power settings alone shouldnt be causing it.  But hopefully if it is a laptop, the power is plugged in and the install is not being attempted on battery alone.  Seems to shut off during the install, per the OP.
