Calculator: 1 + 1 / 2?

Recommended Posts

On the iPhone calculator I press "1" then "+" then "1" then "/" then "2" then "=".

It should equal "1" as calculators follow the order that buttons are pressed rather then operator precedence.

The iPhone calculator shows "1.5".

A regular calculator and the Windows XP calculator shows "1".

Why?

the iphone is taking it as an expersion in which it is using the order of operations.

multiplication and division before addition and subtraction

regular calculators(which windows emulates) only do one operation at a time in the order it was input.

It should equal 1.5.

1+1/2 = 1.5. No doubt about it.

You can get the result you want by doing:

1. 1 + 1 = 2

2. 2 / 2 = 1

Some calculators will automatically add brackets to the sum as it's going along, so in your example the sum becomes (1+1)/2.

FYI, the 'scientific' calculator in Windows comes up with 1.5 - the same as the iPhone.

right. but a normal calculater will do

1 + 1

= 2 (held in memory)

/ 2

= 1 (held in memory)

these are dumb calculators. nothing like a scientific or graphing calculator

if you want a dumb calculator to come up with the right answer you have to input the question in the proper order of operations.

It's a little something you learned in school called PEMDAS or GEMDAS

Grouping/Parentheses/Brackets/Braces/Absolute Value

Exponents/Radicals

Multiplication/Division Left to Right

Addition/Subtraction Left to Right

Funny the Windows 8 calculator does not follow GEMDAS in standard mode, but it does in Scientific mode. Scientific gives 1.5 and standard gives 1.

as i said standard calculators don't impose the order of operations. they are dumb. they do it in the order it was inputted.

I know what you're saying, but it seems like the iPhone way is preferable because it allows you to do both.

To get the answer the OP wants, he can just hit the buttons in the following order:

1

+

1

=

/

2

=

If he wants it to be worked out using the correct order of operations, then you just remove the first =.

No,no,no you've got it all wrong, the iPhone DOES follow GEMDAS and so does Scientific Mode on the Windows 8 calculator. The Standard mode on the Windows 8 calculator is what you call a "dumb" calculatore.
