New Comcast Install - RT-AC68U - Slow DL through router

Recommended Posts

Just had Comcast out yesterday after moving, and went with their 105mbps service. My issue:

Connected PC straight to modem, I get 125mbps or so down. So the service is working fine.

Connected router (Asus RT-AC68U latest firmware, default settings since I've reset it umpteen times) to modem, and speedtest.net reports downloads of about 12mbps (about 10% of what it should be) and uploads of about 25mbps (what I SHOULD be getting as far as U/L goes).

Wired to the router or wireless. Doesn't matter.

So I'm guessing there's some smoking gun of a setting that will fix it, but I can't find it. I've tried googling it, but I can't figure out which search words will actually help me find what i'm looking for.

Does anyone with this router know what might help?

What modem do you have, you sure its not a gateway? Could be something as simple as duplex mismatch between your router and the "modem" Your seeing horrific speeds compared to what you should have.. Which points to duplex problem, cable issue. Did you try changing the cable between your modem and router - is this the same cable that use to connect your PC?

For anyone having the same issue, after more reading, I found out you can do a more thorough hard reset by pressing & holding the WPS button on the side of the router while powering on the thing, and it will totally wipe the router. After that, it took me to the setup process like I had just bought it, set everything, and speeds were what they should be. In case anyone has the same problem.

Hey Budman, yeah, the modem is one I purchased, its a Motorola Surfboard SB6141 which is rated for up to like, 350mbps, so it is definitely made to handle 100. I had tried a few different cables (sometimes it's nice being an IT guy. That crap is all over the place around here!) but the only thing it needed was to have whatever stored settings that were surviving a factory reset on the router to be killed. The WPS + Power on router took care of it. Thanks for the suggestions though!

Well, I don't know what I did, but it's back to being slow again.

And HockeyFan, this laptop I also upgraded to an Intel 7260, and when I'm on the 5ghz network, I'm connected to the router at... 866Mbps. So it's definitely running at AC speeds, it's just ... slow. This is absurd. 2.4 connects to the router at 130.

What bugs me most, is that uploads are running about 25mbps. Downloads are 14mbps or so. Clearly the down shouldn't be slower than the up. Ugh.

Well if its back to slow, then your reset was not the answer.. And I would remove that as being the answer til such time you find the actual fix. So now your only slow wifi, or wired to the router as well?

I have the SB6120, older brother to your 6141.. It should have lights for your lan, do they match up with the speed your router shows for wan connection..

I had similiar issues too but I changed something in the wireless settings & that seemed to fix my problem. I just can't remember what I did. This was more than 6 months ago & I don't use that laptop anymore.

There were many complaints about the 7260. Check out the Intel forums.

The slowness is when I'm wired to the router as well. So it's not a wireless issue. But even if the modem was connected to the router at 100mbps, i'd be getting downloads at around 85mbps, not 15mbps. There's some sort of wonkiness in the firmware or configuration of the router's gui or something that's holding it back.

But if modem thinks connection is full duplex, and router thinks its half - then you get all kinds of speed issues where you see like very small percentage of speed.. So if at 100, its quite possible you would only see 10 or 15mbps, etc..

Dumb question but when the Comcast guy came out, did he provision your modem or the crap one he brought out? If he provisioned the gateway you will need ot call and have them provisions yours, and from my experience they tend to not install third party hardware like self purchased modems, but that may have  changed

He didn't bring out a modem because we let them know we had our own when we ordered service. It's provisioned as a SB6141, which is what it is. I talked to Comcast first thing this morning. Also, if I connect the PC directly to the modem, I get 120ish mbps. Its the router being in between that causes the speed to drop to about 12mbps.

Also, tried a different known good network cable between modem & router & it made no difference.

I'm gonna try reverting back to an older firmware on the router & try that.

So, just for kicks, I tried downloading a copy of the Windows 7 ISO, and it was going about 3MB/s, so I started another copy at the same time, and it went around 6MB/s. So I guess I'm actually getting the correct speeds, but speedtest.net AND the Comcast speedtest tool thing are just wrong. I have no idea why or how that would or could be, but that's what appears to be going on.
