Over 250,000 animals killed as part of a festival

  • Hundreds of thousands of animals set to be slaughtered during two-day religious festival in Nepal

The Hindu festival is held every five years in honour of Gadhimai, the goddess of power

Festivities kicked off on Friday morning with the mass-slaughter of 5,000-6,000 buffalo in a field

The last time the festival was held, in 2009, more than 250,000 animals were killed.

I would link you all to the pictures of all this happening but I don't think I'm allowed so you'll have to find them your self if your interested enough.

Tell me your opinion of this.

are the animals eated afterwards?   or wasted?

there are 2.5 MILLION people at the festival.  if all the meat is eaten, then it is no more cruel then eating the hamburger in your local take out.

most slaughterhouses kill animals in terrible conditions.

No it all goes to waste. So the entire thing is pointless.

Nope it all goes to waste. So they basically do this for no good reason.

It is a waste of meat. Look fun though.

EDIT: "the animal hides and skin will be sold to traders who have contracted to buy them" ?

Find me one of those guys and well..I'll make sure that they might not see another day :)

######ing tough guys with machete's.

Don't get me wrong, I eat meat but this...this is far from killing them humanly.

By their logic we need to start cutting heads off when someone has an "death sentence" on him-

Not sure if joking...but what looks fun about it?

I mean...I'm far from an animal activist...but crap like that does invoke a sense of sorrow for those animals over the cruel (and sheer magnitude) over how they died (for no good reason).

Mass amount of people.

Meant for good luck and fortune.

If you are male, you may get to kill something.

I am fine with this.

They waste food and meat and such and they do it in a gross nasty way and act like total savages, yet they want people to feel sorry for them and send food months later because they have no food? WTF is wrong with people??!!!

So many charity emails get spread around to "help the nepalese get food" and yet they waste a whole bunch for religious "festivals" .... ?

I'd say nobody should help them out if they waste food like that!

surprised that 84% of the world still clings to mythology. That means more then 8/10 here even at neowin believe in it.

Not that does not mean that at all ;)    I cannot believe you manage to come to that conclusion.

Neowin user base is completely different from total world population representation.

I am almost certain most of this 2.5 million people who showed up there have hard time reading and writing, not even talking about internet access

Same applies to the total world population. Rural india and china together with many other countries compose a massive chunk of that population - again, myths are popular.

I thought Hindus worshipped cows/buffaloes. And yeah, I agree it's a waste if it's all thrown away. Maybe ship it all off to some poor country in Africa? What would be awesome though is if there was a massive cookout afterwards.

We as a planet are not good at food conservation...

'Households are wasting around 570,000 tonnes of fresh meat each year, with a value of ?1,300 million, and nearly half of it could be used. According to new book Farmageddon, that's about 50 million chickens, 1.5 million pigs and 100,000 beef cattle. Globally it's close to 12 billion animals: an extraordinary amount of living creatures born to be wasted."

?Not sure where the 250,000 comes from, I read 5,000 buffaloes but 1 is perhaps 1 to many.

However would these animals have been breed if not to be killed...

So I suppose GOD commanding the jews to kill sheep, doves etc for temporary atonement is bad? some cases are legal and justified. Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world.

Yeah that figure isn't just buffalo deaths. Its including all the other animals they killed along the way.

Ok it appears to be the third largest slaughter of animals behind Thanksgiving and Eid. The BBC reports that all the meat and skins are sold to traders.

Still sounds to me a horrific event.

Just did some quick research , I'm reading that the meat, bone, and hides are then sold. Also, the attendees at the festival can be upwards of 5 million.

EDIT:// It does seem that the animals could be treated much more humanely. Although, first party sources of information on the festival would be preferable. I wouldn't exactly trust most western media sources regarding something like this. It's always going to be fits of outrage for advertising revenue.
