Looking at some of the apple support forums it does seem that pptp vpn has some issues.  According to one thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6606981?start=0&tstart=0

There is a workaround:

When having the client computer (the one you are using) network settings configured to either just use DHCP or DHCP with manual address, the VPN connections (both L2TP and PPTP) work.  If using ARD to access computers on the local network, the results are better if you select "Send all traffic over VPN connection" under advanced options for the VPN connection.

You might need to manually configure a default route or move the interfaces around.

yes I did think of this, though i did not want to mess with anything that i didnt have to before but if it comes down to it i will

getting through the vpn isnt the issue, its the fact i want to use my ethernet while working on the vpn its self (side by side) which worked before

And why does it not work? What does your routing table look like, many vpn clients default to using the vpn as default gateway. So you wouldn't be able to access stuff that is on your local network, be it you had a physical connection to it or not.

What does your route table look like before you connect to vpn, and after.

Also is your wifi connection, before you make the pptp connection in the same segment as your wired connection?

On a side note -- who still uses PPTP? Its been deprecated for years!!

Probably the same people who insist on using proprietary VPN solutions which require custom clients and Java to be installed.
