riot Posted December 4, 2014 Share Posted December 4, 2014 Hi! I need to connect two switches that are about 800ft apart. Both switches are Cisco/Linksys SRW2024 24-port switches. I know I can't use copper as the distance is too much. The switches have SFP (mini-GBIC) ports on them that I assume I can use to connect them using fiber. A local company will sell me the fiber pretty cheap and they will terminate it for me as well. The problem is, I have no idea what I need to connect these two switches. Single mode or multimode fiber? SC/APC, SC/UPC, SFP, Mini-GBIC, it's all greek to me. I'm hoping someone can help me out with what I need to purchase to connect these two switches. Thank you!! hjf288 Posted December 4, 2014 Share Posted December 4, 2014 You want 2 Multimode SFP 1000BASE-SX modules and .50 micron OM2 or OM3 multimode fiber.. are they terminating to a tray or just laying a cable between the two and splicing connectors to the ends for direct attach? If they are just doing a direct attach then you want LC-LC. trek Posted December 4, 2014 Share Posted December 4, 2014 Careful with the SRW2008, they use the small business fiber SFP modules. You can't use the normal Cisco Catalyst SFP's in them. trek Posted December 5, 2014 Share Posted December 5, 2014 Also, if your contractor is terminating both ends into a fiber tray then you'll need to get yourself a couple of short fiber patch cables.
