How Fing app works?

Hi there!

 

I need to do an app in vb .net that scan the network. 

 

Seems that Fing makes a great job doing it. How does Fing work? Which protocols it uses?

 

Using ping -a is not returning all the information that Fing gives me.

In programming terms. Detect (Or input) a subnet. Ping Each device on that subnet. If it replys then what else do you need to do? Look up the name in DNS? Check for active services, HTTP,FTP Etc....

 

Alot of these functions in VB.NET will have been written 1000 times over on free code sites all over the internet.
