Galaxy Tab S / iPad Air ... best for internet usage?

Recommended Posts

The tab wont be used for games or anything strenuous. It's only really going to be used for browsing the internet. An alternative to a laptop/PC.

So forget that you like your iPad because it runs your games well so your answer would be iPad based on that.

Or forget you like your Samsung because you hate everything Apple & your answer is based on that.

But for internet browsing, which would be the better tab?

All reviews i read say the iPad Air 2 is the better one (although the Air 2 is out of the question since 64GB is not needed but 32GB might be). But these reviews will be weighing up all the things the tab can do instead of focusing on just net browsing, so i'm not sure.

I would've thought perhaps the Tab S since the screen is larger (& to me the clarity is better) but having not used either, i'm asking you guys.

So which & why?

Thanks.

If it's just internet, then they are both basically on par. Which ever one you like best or find cheapest.

You might find a few more sites optimized for iPad's vs other platforms, but really there's no difference if you are just talking a browser. So all it comes down to then is price, size, battery life (if that's an issue).

Either is a good choice.

Since everyone is different, I'd suggest checking out both units in person and choosing the one you think feels better to hold and has the screen you prefer looking at. And which one you can get for the best price.

For me i think the Tab S has the best screen. It obviously wins hands down on size but the clarity is incredible. When you look at that screen it's just wow. The iPad is nice, sure, but not the same as the Tab S in my opinion.

So then ... while i've got this thread running, why is it that reviews put the iPad above the Tab S? Obviously they look at more than just a browser, but what tips it?

I haven't read any reviews, but I'm going to guess and say the Samsung tablet would be knocked down a few points because of the TouchWiz UI and plastic-y built quality.

I was wondering - what of this apple care? I was told it covers broken hardware.

The wifes Galaxy Tab (1) for example started acting up after about 16 months. Not very good if your ?300 item is only lasting 16 months. Her Galaxy S3 phone & my iPhone 4S have lasted much much longer. Her tab started acting very laggy, freezing & refusing to turn on. Now she can't let the battery run out else it can take a days charge to get it going.

I was wondering if this was an Apple product whether this apple care would take care of it. I was also wondering whether Samsung have something similar?

Here is what Applecare+ is basically about..

AppleCare+ for iPad extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPad and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a $49 service fee plus applicable tax.1

What that means, it doubles the manufacturers warranty and phone support and if you happen to accidentally shatter the screen of wreck the iPad, they will replace it for $49.  I've had AppleCare+ on my iPhone and it's worth every penny.  Apple's customer support is truly great.

Edit: Beaten to it.

From the Apple site:

Get repair coverage for your iPad and its battery, including coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage from handling, each subject to a $49 service fee.

Between the Galaxy Tab S and the iPad Air 2 absolutely the iPad Air 2 because of the huge difference in performance and the longer update cycle (36 months since it's new, but the Tab S may last longer if you plan using CyanogenMod). Between the Galaxy Tab S and the iPad Air 1 (that is still noticeably faster) it depends on which features you weight the most. It has two cores (the Air 2 has three) but those two cores are faster than the whole 4 cores of the Tab S. On the Tab you can use Adblock or other browser extensions but on the Tab you get all the horribly-gimmicky Samsung TouchWiz mess that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. I have a Galaxy Tab with the Snapdragon 800 and it's nowhere as smooth as an iPad Air.

BTW Remember that if you are going to use apps the iPad Air 2 is going to be updated 1 year more (3 instead of 2), so it will last 1 year more than the iPad Air 1 (there's little to no backward compatibility on tablets). Buying an iPad Air 1 when the 2 is out is like burning one third of its value already since it's going to last 1 year less.

That applecare is interesting.

So, if your tab starts lagging helllishly and you just so happen to drop it out of your upstairs window & break it (for example) and say it was your young child who did it (for example) then for a small fee they would replace it.

Sweet :)

The screen on the tab S is amazing, the multiple users feature is a nice addition & multi window too is another great feature. I personally have an iPad air 2 and a Sony Xperia Z2 tablet and find my android gets more use

Actually, while most Samsung smartphones have TouchWiz, none of their tablets do.  (Also, Samsung's Galaxy Nexus - as a Nexus smartphone - specifically lacks TouchWiz; the Verizon Wireless variant is mere feet away,)

If you are going to use a smartphone - any smartphone - for any sort of Internet connectivity, it is decidedly preferable that said phone also support Wi-Fi, in addition to carrier-based Internet connectivity.  (The reason it is preferable is rather obvious - to avoid shredding through your data plan.)  Further, I don't find the Galaxy Nexus plastic-y at all - and it is older than the current model Galaxy S5, let alone the S4 - and it's older than even the S4.  (Yes - the Galaxy Nexus also supports Wi-Fi.)

Also, what is the build quality of older iPhones (specifically the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5c) that are comparable to the Galaxy Nexus or S4? (No - the Nexus isn't mine; it is Mom's replacement for her not-so-smartphone.)

I don't know if it's technically TouchWiz but it looks pretty much similar on my Tab Pro. And the Tab S reviews clearly talk about TouchWiz: http://androidandme.com/2014/08/news/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-10-5-software-experience-touchwiz-is-gaudy-but-functional/. This review even lists it clearly in the "cons": http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/samsung/galaxy_tab_s_10_5/549256/

What carriers choose to do to the system is up to them, but Samsung tablets you buy from a store very much use TouchWiz.
