How I Learned to Feed a Family of Four on ?500 a Week

Over breakfast the other morning, my husband Jeremy suggested, that as a family, we should start trying to economise. Now, we are comfortably set, but Jeremy worries that we can sometimes be a little too free with our money. It?s not unusual for him to come up with the odd money saving scheme, and to try to rope the whole family into the adventure. Well, I like a good challenge as much as anyone, so I decided to see how much money we could save on our weekly food bill. Determined to prove to Jeremy that I could be as economical as the next woman, I cut our weekly food budget down to ?500 for the week, and with our daughter Alexandra?s help set out to do the weekly shop. Truth be told, it was more difficult than I expected. But we managed to see it through, and even completed our weekly food shop with a little money left over.

This has to be a perfect example of trolling. Either that, or I'm worried for some people. Reading through the comments at the bottom, it's hard to tell.

(I think it's worth noting that her Twitter account was started the day after the article was published. I'm assuming it's a parody account.)

I hope it's a parody account, I could feed a family of four comfortably on ?500 for a month!

Reading the comments makes me laugh, definitely a joke.

Almost $800 bucks a week US....

BS article.  I had a family of 6 growing up and we had no problem living off way less than that per week and we still ate good.  Either the poster has more money than sense, or have no idea how a lot of other people live.

Those comments are awesome.

"I find you can significantly cut down on your Butchers bill by eating poor people."

"I find that when times are tough the cheapest way to feed the family is to eat poor people.  It?s humane too, as once they stop struggling, they?re actually quite grateful, knowing they are contributing to their betters."

Of course, then there's the priceless outrage from people who apparently have no sense of humor. There's one who even insisted that initially they thought it was parody, but because she responded to some comments, that means it must be really what she thinks. :s

granted, i've seen poor families spending much more then middle class ones (therefor increasing their poverty), so this isn't that unusual.

You might need to make some not very pretty changes;

maybe only have steak once a week, drink Prosecco instead of champagne,

maybe even buy meat that isn?t free range.

Just remember ? we?re all this together.

I feed a Family of 5 on $40 a week and its not a problem at all (this includes 3 meals a day)

Sounds a lot like my budget for 2 people. Food prices are higher here than even in cincinatti for some odd forsaken reason. Only decent place is Kroger for food since the other places don't compete on price even aldi here isn't so cheap anymore.

Cost of living has generally gone up for everything here in parkersburg-marietta area. Rents have gone up 250/mo on average and Berk is buying up all the properties and makring them sky high.

I got to cincy or columbus and stuff is cheaper there even though it's a larger city. Food prices have just gotten rediculos lately I think it's because the california drought and a lot of food comes from there.

All totaled, we spent just under ?63 and were able to get all of basic household items including toiletries for the week. Not too bad for our first stop.

i bet the toilet paper tastes like crap

Just had a look, its definitely satire.

funny though and the comments and replies to the people who think its real is pretty funny also.

The person is also trolling organizations like RSPCA with requests to babysit her cat, calling one of her kids ugly and the other good looking, etc.
