Line in Jack Power Limit

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know what the power limit normally is on a line-in or microphone jack on a computer?  I'd like to experiment with connecting my CB radio's PA speaker jack to the line-in or microphone jack to use my CB microphone on my PC, but the PA jack outputs 15 watts and I'd hate to burn something up.

Just experimented just for the heck of it, had to crank my mic gain on the radio down to about 2/3 max.  At full the audio would fizzle out after 2 or 3 seconds of recording.  Reason I'm curious is I could use it with audio calls via Skype and such to have an effective "push to talk" option so if I'm talking to somebody online via voice they're not sitting there listening to breathe when we're not saying anything, and it's a "hardware" push to talk option instead of a software one.

What do you guys think?  Does this sound OK, or is it too much?  Personally I think the audio from the CB is a bit loud compared to the Playstation headphones.

Here's a FLAC recording.
