minimum requirement for 4k @30Hz

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a laptop that can output 4k @30Hz.

what's the minimum I need? I currently have on-board integrated Intel graphics and as soon as I plug the monitor into the HDMI, it goes blank and freaks out on me.

thanks,

RK

What model is your Intel integrated graphics? You can check in Device Manager under Display Adapters. Make sure your driver is up-to-date (go to Intel's site directly instead of relying on Windows Update).

I recommend any laptop which has display port, most modern ultrabooks will be able to work with a external 4k monitor.

If your laptop does not have display port or hdmi 4k (nvidia gtx600 series and newer or similiar amd gpu).

Keep in mind that currently hdmi supports 4k at 30hz and display port 4k at 60hz.

Also you might consider this when you have usb 3.0 and don't want to buy a new pc/laptop: http://club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/usb-30-to-4k-dp-adapter.html

HDMI 2.0 can do 4K at 60hz.

My LG 4K TV has HDMI 2.0 ports and mentions that right on it.

Most recent laptops should he able to do basic 4K however.

While we are on the subject of 4k screens.  would my laptop be able to make use of a 4k screen if i replaced the current one.

its a 17.3 inch 1080p screen at the moment. running a 16GB ram intel core i7 4700MQ and nvidia 840m. Would it be worth upgradeing?

Yes it would, the Nvidia 840M is not a bad gpu but there are more powerful ones out there, whether it's worth upgrading is up to you (i.e. is getting a better framerate in your games worth buying a high-end laptop).
