JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Police arrested a suspected armed robber in Northwest Jacksonville on Tuesday who attempted to flee the scene in a taxi cab, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

About 8 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the Metro PCS store in the 5500 area of Soutel Drive in reference to an armed robbery.

According to JSO Sgt. John Nobles, before the incident, the man called a taxi cab, and when it arrived, he went into the store and committed an armed robbery.

?As we arrived, he was getting into the taxi cab to leave,? Nobles said. ?Bystanders that were standing on the corner got involved, pointed him out to us, and he fled out of the taxi.?

He was apprehended about a block north of the store, Nobles said.

Nobles said the man took an undisclosed amount of money, which was found inside the taxi cab along with the gun used in the robbery.

Two employees in the store and the driver of the cab were not injured in the incident, according to police. An officer sustained minor injuries during the arrest and is being treated at a hospital.

Nobles commended the bystanders for getting involved and helping police.

?One of them assisted in taking the guy into custody,? Nobles said. ?It was a great job by the people in the community.?
