Adding mSATA to lappy advice

Recommended Posts

If I were to add an mSATA hard drive - around the 512Gig to 1TB size - to an HP lappy, how would I transfer the OS (Win 8.1) and other crap from the existing hard drive and make it boot from the mSATA drive? I will be keeping the existing HDD for data storage.

Any recommendations as to mSATA drives? - UK prices please.

ahh i have the 17" inch version that does not have a MSATA connection. i would recomend you contact HP support and request a set of recovery disks.

They will send them out for free to you as they did with me when i was having issues creating a usb recovery stick, and i  was unable to used dvds as i did not have them

when the disks arive install your MSATA drive and take out the other drive, boot your laptop with the recovery disks that you receive from hp and the setup process will make a new installation on your msata drive, the good thing is that by using the disks hp send you will have a recovery parition created for you so if you ever need to restore your laptop you can use the HP recovery tools from the UEFI   bios.

if you rather not contact HP the thread below will assist you

Hello,

I would recommend a clean install of the OS to the mSATA SSD via the manufacturer's recovery discs, followed by OS updating, application reinstallation and, lastly, copying your data over from the old HDD to the new one.  Only after you have used the computer for a sufficient time (maybe a few weeks?) and have ensured that everything is working and you have all the data that you need should you wipe the HDD and reuse it as a data drive.

Or use macrium reflect...it will image your hdd to your msata.

1. install the msata ssd to your laptop.

2. Format it as gpt

3. use macrium reflect to clone your drive to the ssd.

4. use macrium reflect winPE environment to fix boot issues that you will definetely face.

5. after booting up from the ssd, run winSAT so windows realizes it's on an SSD.

This is all i recall from memory when I went through installing an msata ssd to my laptop. It took some time to figure out as most people tend to do a fresh install, but after a lot of hair pulling, i managed to get it done successfully. Make sure to research thouroughly on the listed steps if you decide to go ahead with this method.

Good luck!
