streetw0lf
Did anyone vet this guy to see if he scamming people? After all anyone can post a sob story and get donations. In fact, I just totaled my Ferrari and need another one. I hate to take my Lambo out of the garage. :-) GotBored, blank and +E.Worm Jimmy 3 Share
COKid
Yeah, I hope all is well with Obi. I went off on him publicly here once I found out he was going to use our donations for a gaming rig. I was certainly out of line with my remarks, and have since kept my pie hole closed. At the time, though, I couldn't help but question the wisdom of a homeless guy needing a $1000+ laptop. From what I recall, he received around $1500, so I thought maybe using more of the money for food and housing made more sense, but looking back, that was not for me to decide. I also remember more than one Neowin member offering Obi a place to stay, but I am not sure he ever took advantage of that generosity. Anyway, I don't regret the 10 bucks I contributed and hope things are looking brighter for Obi as we approach 2015. Once again, I will now remain silent on the topic. I have this nasty habit of typing out stuff online before allowing my brain the opportunity to think it through. +E.Worm Jimmy 1 Share

That's first month rent + DD for housing. I am not helping someone buy a computer when there are other people who need the necessities of life. Some people make a living with them. If not, a $300 would be fine. I just got an Asus Transformer Book flip for $299 during that Microsoft sale. Not a bad machine at all. What about next months rent ? money was donated for a computer, he spent it on what it was donated on and got a powerful computer that will last him instead of a getting by computer. And heck you don't get that much for 800-900 anyway today in computers. Draconian Guppy 1 Share

First month rent and DD for the $1500 that he got, it would over 2 months + DD for a lot of places. it would have been enough to get shelter for 3 months even from a motel.... then get any job you can, pumping gas, cleaning, night stocker, fast food etc... all these jobs are easy to get since not people are picky and don't like doing them. Or I guess he could still live in his car and use a nice gaming laptop... everyone i guess has their individual priorities. blank, Ice_Blue and Mr.ed 3 Share

The computer was purchased so that he could work and buy his own necessities for life. It's a gift that keeps on giving unlike a 1 time food donation that only turns out poop. (not that I'm against feeding hungry homeless people, I have done this myself many times.) that was the intention, but from what I have seen in the last 10 years, it NEVER plays out this way. Think about it for a second... if everything worked out, would one assume he would be on neowin as before, updating how awesome he was doing now. I predict, the laptop is gone and he is in the same situation as before. I am hoping this is not the case. xrobwx71 1 Share
blank
Or he could get a nice job, doing what he is actually skilled to do and not have to live in his car anymore, paying rent +DD +Cable +Internet +food +contribute to the economy, ect, ect. He already had a daily job that required a laptop before it got stolen, and he was still broke and homeless. So obviously his daily computer job wasn't paying the bills. Did it magically change after he bought a $1,500-2k laptop? who knows Even a low paying min wage job at MCdonalds would pay enough to afford a small apartment and food. If Mcdonalds only hires part time, then he could use that extra time to fiddle around with the computer job to earn some extra cash, and if in the end it pays off then good. Seems like alot of people want to stick to easy computer jobs and not do actual work that pays the bills. Alot of them are broken and living at home, or homeless. remixedcat
1000 might get you by for 1 month if you are lucky but in my area rents went up 300 in only 4 months due to a few announcements that some big factories are being completed as well as fracking industry employment. I can easly rent out a ROOM in my house for 120+week with 100 SecDep. Fleabag effiencies here that used to be 350/mo last year are now 700/mo and these are the size of an average hotel room. 2BR apartments here start at 650/mo with 1st+last+SD due at signing. so 1000/usd won't even cut it here. and it was a cheap area to live in. T3X4S
Its tough. So many times people are simply depending on even taking advantage of people's generosity. I did donate to someone in here needing help by giving them access to my volume license(s) my family's company has - Its not much of a charity but maybe it helped someone in need and not used or abused. My father used to pull over everytime we saw someone on the side of the road with a "Will Work for Food" sign - he would give them $100 bill and drive off. Probably did it 10x - it stopped when we convinced him many times it was a scam - a shame because I know that would have helped someone.I guess what Im saying is - you cant be too sure. You can get plenty for 800-900, unless you want to game which is not (or should not be) a blip on the radar of a homeless person.
