Anybody knows of a Mini PCIe wireless N card with Win 8.1 support?

Recommended Posts

I want to upgrade a ~2007 laptop my father has to Windows 8.1, all the components it has are supported in Windows 8+ except for the internal WLAN card and I'm looking for a replacement. The laptop expects cards in Mini PCIe form factor instead of the current Half Mini PCIe, and the antenae cables are not long enough to get to one of reduced height.

I looked at what Intel makes but I couldn't see any that has support for Windows 8.1. They have an 4965AGN that is full size but only has an "inbox driver" (whatever that is) and its use is not supported.

Looking at Atheros based cards I see there are chipsets that have Windows 8.1 support but I wouldn't know how to compare them. Can anybody shed some light on it or know of a good card? Recent cards would be preferrable but given the form factor I don't know if there'd be still something new being made.

If it has Windows 7 drivers chances are pretty good they will work in 8.1 as well. My laptop is from 2008 so has no official Windows 8 drivers but everything works just fine using the Windows 7 drivers where needed.

Hello,

If you are able to re-route the cabling to reach a half-height Mini PCIe card, you could use a Mini PCIe bracket adapter with an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300.

Both drivers are availible automatically via Windows Update.
