Husband accidentally trades Xbox game with precious family photos inside

Recommended Posts

Newport News, VA ? ?My heart was broken,? says Christina Beckett.

Irreplaceable memories of her son?s first days in the world are gone.

?The first moments of his life, pictures of me holding him in the hospital, and they were up through the first few months of his life,? Beckett says.

A few weeks ago Beckett?s husband Chris traded in the Xbox 360 game Destiny, but inside the case was a memory card holding pictures from the day their son Peyton was born.

?What I did was I took the card, slipped it right under the tab just like that,? Chris says. ?It was like one of those oh crap moments.?

?I just kept saying ?I can?t believe you did this, I can?t believe you did this,?? Christina says.

It was close to midnight when Christina rushed to the Jefferson Commons shopping center where Chris traded in the game.

?I was up at Gamestop crying in my pajamas,? she says.

?I?m going through the house flipping stuff over and she?s going down there to talk to him I?m just wondering in my head God, I hope she finds it because if she comes back here without that SD card because if she doesn?t I?ll have it worse than I did before she left,? Chris says.

But Christina came back empty handed.

?It?s a bad feeling when you?ve lost something that means so much,? Chis says.

They do have some photos from that day; they snapped a few cell phone pictures of Peyton. But it?s the sting of what?s lost that hurts the most.

?I just can?t get them back if I don?t get the card back,? Christina say.

Christina and Chris say they?ve exhausted their search.

?I?ve gone to different Gamestops, I?ve talked to so many store managers, corporate, everyone,? Christina says.

?We managed to contact customers who bought used copies from that store,? Chris says. ?Not all of them replied back to the manager. It could also be behind some gift wrap paper, waiting to be opened Christmas Day.?

They are now offering a $200 reward to the person who returns their precious memories.

?Trying to motivate people because I want the pictures back because that?s all I have,? Christina says.

I do hope there is a happy ending to this for the family.  but she realises it was a silly mistake to store the memory card in the came case.there is no need to make her feel worse. perhaps if a news station picked up on this just for the sake if it being christmas they might have a chance of recovering the missing memory card.

wonder if the managers of those stores will let her put up a "missing" poster in their stores.?

except she is not a member of neowin is she!

Of course she (and her husband) aren't or else this wasn't a story. :D

He hope it turns out for good, but it's kind of given that those photos are gone. Btw: is the child dead? because while losing a babies photos is bad, the reaction they had was more exaggerated, like the baby was dead and those photos were the only memory they had of him.

I'm always surprised when someone leaves the only copy of the picture on their SD cards.

For my pictures, i immediately copy them to my computer (delete from card) which then gets copied to 2 backup sources (external drive, and cloud storage).

Makes me giggle how they pretend it was precious to them and meant so much, even though they took absolutely zero steps to make sure the photo is secure.

Even when i was 14 and all we had was 3inch "floppy" disks, and cd rs, i was making sure i had a copy. Seems like common sense to me. And im semi-retarded at least.

Why the hell would you put an sd card containing important pictures in a damn video game case?

Why the hell would they keep their pictures stored only in eventually-it-will-break-and-it-will-be-unrecoverable flash storage if those pictures were so important?

like forest gump said "supid is stupid does"   the mother is fully aware of whats happened and will no doubt make backups next time.

its a pointless exercise in trying to condemn the parents for making a mistake of storing the sd card inside a game case. some of the other posts ive seen are really harsh and would deserve a ban should they have been posted on neowin.

The baby could eat the SD card too...

Some people have this weird irrational attachment to photos like they don't have a memory anymore. Most of them because they feel the need to show everyone their baby/kid photos, but sorry everyone thinks every elses babies are ugly bags of wrinkly skin, you only think babies are cute because it's yours.

So here's what I never understand.

This picture's were SO important, but they had one source, a memory card.  No upload, no backup, heck no print outs.

And the card was just sat inside a game case.  When was it last looked at - you know, these "treasured photos"?

Exactly, I keep my sd cards on top of my dvds and in the tray under my keyboard shelf, where they're safe :p

Whenever I have important photos I always make sure to back them up. By default my phone auto-uploads everything to Google+ and I manually back them up as well, both locally and with various cloud services. Whenever I haven't backed

While I empathise with the loss I cannot sympathise with the reckless manner in which the couple treated their supposedly important possessions. I also don't like the culture of trading in games after playing them, as I buy digitally and like to be able to go back to them at a future date. Hopefully this will teach them an important lesson.

That's actually more 4chan's line of work, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.

Was going to say that, but I haven't seen anything positive come out of 4chan for a long time. (not that I've really been looking)

That's true! I was basing it on things they have done in the past.

But in all honesty, only those who go on 4chan will know of the recent positive things they've done. And even at that, it's probably quite rare.

Some of you guys are quite harsh - acting like you've never misplaced something in your life.  I hope there's a good ending to this but if it hasn't turned up already...

Sure, I have, I'm annoyed at myself and wish I could undo, and I accept the loss, it's my own damn fault and in the big scheme of things, it's not that important anyway.
