Jumped ship, feeling dirtly, and have a couple of questions

Recommended Posts

Jumped ship from Windows Phone to the iPhone 6 today. I have a couple questions after playing around with it for a few hours. First, is there any way to split up email inboxes so they aren't grouped under the same 'app' (I have an outlook email address for personal email, and an Exchange email for work). Second, is Safari okay, or should I grab a different browser? I downloaded Chrome, but I haven't used either much and Neowin seemed to respond the same on both.

Main reason I switched was the app gap - even with Microsoft working hard, apps come way too late and are of far lower quality. I'm loving the apps on iPhone so far that I had also had on WP far more than their WP counterparts, as well as some apps that weren't on WP.

- try an app called MyMail - it has good MS exchange and duel account support; and a nice UX.

- I also use Chrome -> bookmark and password sync is a must! esp. between my desktop and mobile on go browsing.  Safari is also nice. Its fast and I like its bookmarking system.

If you don't need separate alerts for email, and just want to separate the inboxes,  you can do that by clicking on the "mailboxes" on the top left of the default view, and click on which single account you would like to view the inbox of.

I use Chrome, but Safari is just as good.

There is a great app for Outlook/exchange called Mail+. I got it while it was free for a day. $6 now.

Might go free again. just check here for it and other good apps

It's worth noting, at the core element, all Browsers on iOS are Safari. Apple won't allow another browser, because it violates their app policy.. as such all browsers (Less that Opera that's just images of pages) are all the same Safari engine. The others just have different additions or look. If you use Chrome at home, then it's ideal, bookmark, password, and access to tabs on other devices make it ideal. If not, then there's generally not much reason to move off Safari.

As for Mail, I do as was suggested above, all mail goes through the iOS mail client, then I just enter the mailbox I want when I need to do something specific.. Haven't had any issues, and that's with 5 mailboxes including one Exchange..

The built in Mail client is actually highly customizable. I bet you will be able to separate it like you want. Also, keep in mind the 'Groups' selection in address book and selecting which calendar is your default for new appointments. Dig around in the settings for Mail, Contacts, Calendar and also in Notifications to see if you can set it up the way you want. For example, I only want audio and banner notifications for my personal email, but want to ALSO see work email summary in the notifications pane. Easy to setup, but it did take me some time digging through all the options.

There are lots of alternative email clients as well. As previously mentioned, Mail+ is an option that I've used. Acompli was just bought out by Microsoft and is slated to become the Outlook Mobile app we've all been waiting for.

3rd party solutions are great, because it keeps everything isolated. Only problem is the disconnect with the other apps. If you setup your Exchange server in a 3rd party apps, other apps can't access your work's contact list or if someone sends you a SMS that is contextually recognized as an appointment, iOS can't ship that information to your 3rd party client. In general, my workflow with my exchange server works better with the stock apps.
