My Christmas present to myself : Gigabyte Brix Pro i7-4770R

Recommended Posts

I have a dual monitor couch computer  and so because I do over 60% of my computing on the couch per day I thought it only fitting to get a great computer for the couch. I descied on a Gigabyte Brix mini PC runing an Intel i7-4770R. I maxed it out with 16GB of ram and added a 240 GB Evo 840 mSata.

This thing is crazy fast. It installed the latest 700MB Windows 8.1 rollup in litterally 4 mins.

I've included some photos. I sort of forgot to dust before I took the pictures.

I also like to do lightroom and Sony Vegas so this should do nicely.

What vcfan said also how do you not have neck strain from looking down all the time. Doesn't look like both monitors are level to your eye level

They are both at eye level, plus the front one is on a LCD monitor arm with full range of motion. Could also rotate it too.

ya but I think they only go as high as an i5 or maybe they have an i7 now.

No, you are right.  They only go as far as an i5.

How noisy is the Brix?

I haven't taxed it, but I did do a video encoding with Sony Vegas. Couldn't even hear it.

My last couch machine was an i3-2310m laptop (with the lid shut) with 6GB of ram

That come with a full power brick? I remember the NICUs didnt have the end piece.

Yep full power brick, all the cords you need.

I should make a video how fast this thing cold boots to the login screen ... 3 seconds .. maybe 4?

They have i7 based Gigabyte Brix and even larger ones dedicated GFX cards now.

Intel NUC's go up to 4th gen i7 as well.

I desperately want an i3 based one to replace my aging Shuttle XPS SN21G5 based SteamBox.

Can you link to an i7 Intel NUC please? Been looking but the i5 is the best I've ever been able to find.

Apologies, looks like they showed it off then never actually released it.

Gigabyte Brix pro is the closest match:

So I just got done Trying

2 Wii games that I own in Dolphin for some added resolution. I've tried it before on other systems with decent graphics cards and CPU's ... even my i7 920 downstairs and all I ever got was a slide show, so you can imagine how my jaw hit the floor when I tried it on this system.

Both The New Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong Country Return played at a Smooth Constant 60 Frames per second at 3x the resolution at 18% CPU Usage

as Chris Farley would Say "Oh my Frickn god!"

Don't need no stinking Wii U!

Top is Wii Emulator Dolphin running at native Wii resolution. The bottom one (2nd) is running at 3x Native.

  • 1 year later...

So yesterday for about 20 mins I messed with installing El Capitan on the Brix Pro. It was really, Really easy.

After creating a Bootable usb drive from the Mac using UniBeast, it booted to the install first try and installed and booted to the Mac first try with Native, USB, Video and ethernet support. That is as far as I went because I got busy. But I did order a 512 Msata card which i'm going to split into 2 and put OSX on one and WIndows 10 on the others. I'll let you know more.
