"We couldn't install Windows 8.1" WTF?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, but am running into this issue:

Windows 8.1 Setup

We couldn't install Windows 8.1.

We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 8.1.

0x80070004 - 0x2000D

I have already disabled all non-Microsoft services and all the start-up items and also uninstalled the antivirus prior to install.

Installation was done using Windows 8.1 disc.

Pretty sure you need to install Windows 8.1 update through the Store, or do a clean install from the 8.1 disc.

1st try: I upgraded from the Windows Store. I got stuck at "Setting up 83%" indefinitely

2nd try: I upgraded from the Windows 8.1 disc. I got to "Setting up 76%", then it reboot and give me the error message above.

Get to 83% again, then start unplugging all of your USB devices, keyboard/mouse included. That's during the hardware detection part I believe. Then if should move ahead and plug your stuff back in.

I don't have anything plug in. This is a laptop so I cannot unplug the mouse and keyboard..

There are a couple more suggestions listed here. Have you tried those as well?

I don't think that that applies to me since I am using a disc to upgrade.

What is the make/model of the laptop?

Reset the device to factory defaults then attempt the upgrade with the disk.

Could be you have something installed that is causing the issue.

AVG in particular is known to ###### with the update.

For me it was some Steel Series software, I've also heard some Logitech stuff caused it also

Sounds like software is causing an issue, but your best bet would be back all your data etc and then use refresh to a stock windows 8 no software apply all updates and then try the 8.1 update. If this still doesn't work try chkdsk sometimes an error on the disk can stop windows from updating.

I had a problem upgrading my sons pc to 8.1 when it first can out, turned out it was the NVidia drivers causing the issue during the upgrade process, had to uninstall them, then do the update, then put the drivers back on.  hope that helps.

I've tried again and I am not sure what the problem is. Disk check doesn't show anything.

I have already uninstalled Nvidia driver and I still ran into the same thing.

I got to "Setting up 80%" then it rebooted and show "Restoring your previous version of Windows..."

also got the 0x80070004 - 0x2000D again

"Refresh your PC" doesn't work.

"There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made."

Did you get a recovery disk with your machine? I'd suggest (as a previous poster did) reinstalling windows that way if you can and try the update again as it seems to me you have far worse problems than a failed upgrade.

Regarding that issue there are a bunch of potential fixes here, might be worth trying them out http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/windows-81-update-stuck-at-getting-device-ready-83/931c6232-ec64-4684-a3dc-54ed6a380864

Seriously whats just stopping you from just doing a clean install instead? All the time you have spent working on this you could have just clean installed Windows 8.1 and reinstalled the apps. Besides upgrades are dirty and usually do not turn out well in my experience with servicing computers.

Rings alarm bells, did you disable all these services prior to your first attempt at upgrading?
