Phantom uTorrent activity?

Recommended Posts

I have uTorrent 3.4.2. I'm not running any torrents. There are no completed, seeding, downloading, hidden, no torrents at all visibly linked to the program. But uTorrent's status bar along the bottom is showing that I'm both uploading and downloading. These go as high as a few Kbps (of course if I was actually torrenting something it would be much faster.) Exactly what is uploading and downloading? Here is a screenshot.

Did you try to turn off those advertisements and limit the upload?advertising needs a connection to function or it can't provide new ads.

Dunno, but what's the advertisement with the customisable chick lower left corner???

uTorrent (by default) has been showing ads for a while now, although it's easily turned off. Kind of a turnoff but *shrug* once and done, all in all it's still a very good client, lightweight and fast, still prefer it over Transmission, Tixati, etc.

Not sure about the viability of disabling DHT though, doesn't that kill of magnet support and such too? (Not 100% sure on that one.)

Starting from 3.4.2 versions released since December 2014, it is impossible to disable ads. Even if you change the properties of various options to false, they still revert back to true.

This was the last nail in uTorrent's coffin. I have switched to qBittorrent full time.

To OP, ditch uTorrent  completely. It ain't worth it any more.

First.. the nonsense about the adverts.. Just use an older version and turn off auto-update. Problem solved. It's a torrent client, not an OS, what new features will you be missing?

Second, the phantom traffic.. If I'm not mistaken uTorrent shows all usage in the bottom, not just torrents. As such you will see it downloading adverts, and the client updates there.

Yes. You click Preferences while holding Shift + F2 to disable offers from items hidden in advanced menu.

But I guess it might be some bug with the build I downloaded off uTorrent website. Mind you it did not have a beta tag.

You do understand that days if not weeks after you leave a swarm your data can still be there and other members of the swarm will ask you for pieces that you once had, etc. So even though you don't have anything currently active your still going to see traffic to and from your client..

Well, it's been over 10 years for me using torrents.. the mpaa has yet to do anything.. so they can spy all they want.

uTorrent will always use some DL/UL bandwidth if DHT is enabled.

If you're that bothered by uTorrent though, try qTorrent. You can always review the code and compile it yourself. As uTorrent is being placed more and more under a business model, I would recommend using something else.

uTorrent has some variables that list their "web services" addresses. These can easily be either blocked or changed to a valid entry (e.g. http://127.0.0.1). It will try to change these back to defaults with each upgrade or if you provide an invalid entry e.g. null, "".

I've given up on utorrent a while back, even since, while downloading something, there was no bandwidth (0, nothing worked, not even google) available for everything else (like wireless, for phone, notebook, etc.), even if I limited the values. So I switched to Deluge, works like a charm. Oh yeah, and no ads.

since we are on topic of ads and spying...

I am still using utorrent 1.8.2         -         I LOVE IT.

I see absolutely NO REASON to upgrade.  no ads... tiny client.  works perfect.

why would i need anything else.  if it works, it works.  i don't need their search, their plug-ins, their junk bulk crap.

this is what turned Nero from great to worst, back in the day. i learned my lesson.  no upgrades.

now i wish Skype was as nice. and did not FORCE me to upgrade, while losing functionality.

Here's one reason: private trackers require certain versions of torrent clients for their websites :)

1.8.2 has being consistently good for me, even with private that do not specifically mention it. your mileage may vary.
