DDR4 system or just DDR3

Recommended Posts

I'm on the fence on waiting foe the price to drop on all parts for ddr4 or just get a system with ddr3 ready. I can spend $2k easy on a system but really don't want too. So $1k is fine with me or even a little more for a good gaming and graphic design (adobe).

So I really want a DDR4 system and can wait a little longer for it. Should I wait until a little longer to drop in price or just update my system now. With 1150 motherboard system that I can keep it for $1k

If you can afford it get it. I don't believe DDR4 is that much better performance than DDR3. I think DDR4 would just be a waste of money, IMO.

Don't quote me on this.

But will 6 cores be better for you over 4 cores is another question.

Here is a price comparison between the two to give you a idea of what you want to spend.

$854 - i7-5820K 16GB + MB
$600 - i7-4790K 16GB + MB

In the grand scheme of things - it wont make much difference... unless you are planning on running benchmarks all day

But of course, it matters what you are going to be doing with the machine most of the time

Only go DDR4 if you have to have a 6+ core CPU, or if you're an enthusiasts and want to squeeze as much performance out of benchmarks as possible. That is assuming you don't need it for workstation class work (Video Editing, VMs, etc.). Even Photoshop (I see you're a graphic designer) doesn't need it. A 4790K with enough memory chews right through it's optimized engine. The big plus with DDR4, density, isn't even here yet. Though, once the DDR4 density is there, getting 64-128GB in your desktop/workstation in 4 slots would be a great reason to upgrade, and expensive early on.

If you can, I'd upgrade my current system with 2133 DDR3 and the best Haswell you can afford (4790K) and maybe a really good air cooler or water cooling and overclock if you enjoy tweaking performance. With Air cooling in a SFF case I run my 4790k at 4.5Ghz and never thermal throttle, not even under full load stress testing. The only thing that comes close to utilizing it is working with and visualizing large BI datasets in Excel.

And of course, getting a single or SLI GTX or 970 will destroy all game for at least the next couple years and those will carry over when you do go DDR4 and more cores. The 970 will also help if you make the move to 1440p.

It'll be interesting to see what we get next year with DX12 and more cores available. Hopefully more than games, but games are good. Would love to see MS modernize Windows Media Center. It was before its time, ahead of hardware. Now that the hardware performance is there, and small and cool enough to put a high performance HTPC in, MS has given up on it. :/

Honestly the only reason I went to the Haswell-E platform besides my old setup being super flaky at times is I wanted something with more than 4 cores and was current.  I could have cared less if it was still DDR3 to be honest, my wallet might have liked me more if Haswell-E was DDR3 lol.
