I am using Norton, Norton 360 for me. It hasn't failed me yet these past few years and it has been light on resources and stable ever since I used it. Was using ESET before but there some things they were scanning that somehow wasn't picked up by them, hence the move back to Norton.

Somehow DrWeb is missed in the list. It's main competitor to Kaspersky in its home market. And it's older. Back in 1990's-mid 2000's it was more popular than AVT. Kaspersky came to front mainly thank to marketing and rebranding.

I use mainly standalone scanners - AVZ (most of its technologies were acquired by Kaspersky many years ago), Kaspersky AVT, DrWeb CureIt.

ohh man, dr web was the best.  i remember it saved pc back in DOS times.   i did not know it still existed though.

ESET is the one. I am a virus writter and they released a definition for my last creation within days of its release. And it was not a binary release so they had to compile it and test it etc, they were really fast. Oh, its a Linux virus to make it better. looking at this it looks like a free mashup of other companies engines...  in cloud.    not even sure how can they do this as the engines are paid for.     i am confused now.   sounds like a hack.

You can pay for it. I paid for it. I really like the whitelisting aspect of the AV.

Trend Micro Anti Virus/Internet Security, seems I'm the only one. :(

 

Worked on  military contracts and the department of defense use it on their computers and gave me a license from their enterprise plan that they re-license every year.

So I use it basically cause its free for me, until they decide to change anti-virus companies.

 

It fairly lightweight and I haven't picked up anything nasty with it so it seems to do alright.

 

Haven't used Symantec/PC Tools/Norton in awhile but when I last used it, it was very resource heavy and not sure why it has so many users. It was like the Internet Explorer of the anti-virus world, bloated, slow and very behind in comparison to the competition and most systems came with it (like a free 3 month license or something). Will have to check it out again one day.

 

Before my free Trend license I used Kaspersky and I will likely go back to it if my trend license stops working.

I know about that bug, I actually heard about it here first, then researched it a little.  People would all of sudden have a 600GB AV folder and run out of disk space - pretty crazy.

I would like to say, yes, it was fixed - but I dont know as the 25 or so machines I admin for (family, friends, clients)  through my enterprise license have never experienced it and when you dont have problems, you tend not to research them much.

Another nod for ESET. I truly do not even remember it is running on any of my machines until I get prompted for an update. I use it on all of my devices, even my phone, and it is so lightweight and actually does work.
The easiest recommendation I can make from a software standpoint.

I like this thread - through 2 pages there have been a bunch of different solutions mentioned, but instead of someone just saying, "Oh that sucks - you dont know" - people are giving their reasons why they rely on a certain brand.  When you deal with people who only use the free crap - their expectations are lower, and they tend to be a little out of the loop on things.  Still of the mindset "well you have to use 2 different programs..."  - not if you're main AV program is good... I havent had MBAM installed in 2 years.
