Being a game show contestant is a little like making a speech to Congress naked.

You're already so exposed that the chances of impressing are small.

However, on the New Year's edition of "The Price Is Right," the question of what an iPhone 6 might cost exposed -- well, you decide. The show was revisiting some of its greatest moments of the year.

Here we had a 16GB iPhone with a one-year calling plan, 4 gigs of data and unlimited talk and text . Who would guess what it cost?

The first contestant offered $7,500. Which seemed a little steep, even for Apple prices.

The next one knew better. Or at least thought he did. For he guessed $7,501.

The third was a little more sanguine: $850. The last lady suggested $930.

At this point, presenter Drew Carey's face resembled that of a man who had swallowed a wasp's nest. He mused: "I hope the marketing people at Apple are watching this."

I'm almost certain that Jony Ive doesn't miss an episode. As for the marketing people, well, perhaps they're too busy for such fripperies.

Should you wonder what the right price was, it was $1,969. Which, when you give it careful consideration, is still a remarkably large amount of money.

It may well be that the first contestant was merely dazzled by being on the show, while the second was doing that thing that game-show people do of not thinking but just betting on one number more.

I wonder, though, whether one or two of Apple's marketing executives might now be wondering: "Hey, are we charging enough?"

Wait so retail is... $1,969? On what planet....

I take it you skimmed over the video and therefore are not taking into consideration the 1 year cell phone plan with 4GB of data.

Hmm, that is an iffy price...is it on contract or is it prepaid or is it using one of the Next/Edge/Jump plans? On VZW's 2 year contract, it would cost $1520 (before taxes on phone + monthly bills + activation). On their Edge plan, it'd be $1464 (before taxes on phone + monthly bills).

Either way, $7500 was a stupid answer.

Nearly 2 grand for ... a mobile phone?!? Seriously WTF?!?

The $1969 price was for the iPhone, plus 2 years of wireless service.

And remember -- Price Is Right uses the MSRP  for the bids -- not the real world discount prices that most sellers would ask.

And I would not be surprised if Apple products reached this level in coming years.

What was hilarious is how easily the guy beside the woman was so easily misled by her silly bid.

First, it was with ONE year of service. Second, just no. Apple phones are expensive off-contract, but so are many other flagship phones. It will never hit $7500 for the phone + 1 year of service in the "coming" years. That would make it a luxury item for much of the US population.

Correction... a mobile phone AND one year of service at roughly $110 a month.

Everything with a monthly payment can add up to a crazy amount if you choose to look at it that way.

My parents have had a cable TV subscription for over 30 years.   I'm sure they spent well over $30,000 during that time.

Hell... I've had cell phones and eventually smartphones for 15 years.  I estimate that I've spent at least $15,000 for that privilege.

But most people don't think of it that way.

What... the... fak?

Lumia 930 + 1 year of 5GBs/month of 4G with unlimited free calls, SMS and MMS for 800 USD (so, about 67 USD per month), in Sweden. And the phone is fully unlocked / retail.

Any person that spends that sort of money on a mobile phone plus a year's subscription to a mobile phone network has got more money than sense.

these are average cellular bills in Canada and the USA. The option would be not to use them, but then you wouldn't have it to use. :)

yea, in the US (well, Canada too) we get bent over for cell service. I pay $49 CAD/month for my cell phone (Lumia 830 on Fido for those wondering). Here's what I get. 750MB is more than enough since there's open WiFi pretty much everywhere in Toronto
