Mindovermaster Moderator Posted January 10, 2015 Moderator Share Posted January 10, 2015 This is more amusing than it is technical. I have a broken OCZ Vertex 60GB. I have tested everything out. It's out of warranty. I can't flash it, as it isn't detectable by any system. it's dead. The Question: What should I do with it? Use it as a door stopper? Use as a bookend on my shelf? Any other ideas?
Praetor
can you change the controller board? because it might be that one that is dead, not the memory cells. anyway, i suggest you get your shotgun and blow it way. and film it, please. Nick H. Supervisor Posted January 10, 2015 Supervisor Share Posted January 10, 2015 Use it as a noisy coaster for your drinks. Create a giant catapult and fire it as high in to the air as you can, in order to figure out the range of an SSD before it shatters when coming back to Earth. Etch in your details and use it as an expensive business card Keep it in your pocket and distract people with it while you rob them. (if someone pulled out an SSD I'd probably be distracted over why they brought it with them; my guard is down.) Put it in an envelope labelled, "CONFIDENTIAL - PROPERTY OF THE NSA" and leave it on a park bench. When someone approaches and tries to take it, walk over and attempt to escort them to HQ (bonus points if you're wearing a trench coat, dark glasses and a fedora.) Of course, the answer that makes the most sense is "throw it out." That or "give it to your IT department and tell them it's making odd noises." tsupersonic
Oh yours died too? The OCZ Vertex 60 GB was my first SSD ever, bought in 2009 for $250, died within 4 months. Mine died the same way yours did - controller crapped out, so the PC wouldn't recognize it.
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted January 10, 2015 Author Moderator Share Posted January 10, 2015 Luckily, I don't have a gun, ppl. I just never wated or needed one. Dude, you live in America and don't own a gun?? /end of bigotry Go ahead and rent one, film yourself blowing that SSD into pieces and post the video in here. Oh and put a Warwagon etch on the SSD before you blow it... Jose_49 1 Share

Praetor
You know where I can get a controller board? I had a friend working in a lab that specializes in recovering data from dead media (even CD's) and he had access to an insane amount of controllers. Now that i think of it, it was a silly thing to ask you for because while possible, without the right controller (same model and same firmware) and the right software for the job (the controller knows how many good cells the SSD still has), it's damn impossible. Sorry, it's the tiredness of a long day kicking in, i should go to bed.

spaceelf
I have an SSD that the SATA finger and some of the leads broke off. The electronics work perfectly but I can't use it o.o Really ought to contact support and see if I can get it fixed, even though it was technically user damage.
