What's a free, simple, batch video thumbnail generator?

I need to make thumbnails for almost a thousand videos. Obviously, I don't want to have to do this one at a time. I just need to grab a frame from a minute or two into the videos to use as thumbnails. Any suggestions? I can find a lot by web searching by you never really know what you're getting. CLI programs are fine by me.

Are they MP4 ? If so you can tag them which is 1000 times better than thumbnails as you can set the poster and all other info to be usable in windows explorer.
