Video card suddenly went DARK

Recommended Posts

I used a years old video card in my new desktop, planning it would last for a while, until I could make up my mind on what new graphics card to get.

The card seemingly failed a few weeks ago.

I thought it had vibrated 'loose' from all the fans running in the case.

So I reseated the Radeon card, and it worked OK for a while.

Today my Anti-virus program wanted to reboot, to update itself.

After the rebooting, there was no picture.

I could see a slight bluish light on the screen, but no text -- blank.

I saw in the case the red diagnostic light was on at the video card.

So I took out the graphics card and blew off dust and reseted it with a different screw.

Nothing helped.

Is this typical for a video card to go so suddenly ?

Was working fine until this last Reboot.

I wonder if the new motherboard, power supply, faster CPU, etc. drove it to fail.

It is several years old, so no great loss.

New card on the way.

Thanks for any insights.

I've found when a card fails, it fails on a reboot (or some intensive task).. It's actually not uncommon for electronics in general to fail on a power cycle..

Either way, as was said, replace it. I wouldn't mess with it anymore. Depending on the issues it could cause problems for your motherboard or other components. No sense risking anything else to mess with a card that's well past it's best-by date, and you know what starting to act up.
