What is Your Password?

Recommended Posts

President Obama just unveiled a number of proposals to crack down on hackers. It's great that the government is working on this but we need to do a better job of protecting ourselves. So we sent a camera out onto Hollywood Boulevard to help people by asking them to tell us their password.

People can be idiots....my passwords are always over 8 characters long and, while it has meaning to me, you cannot guess the password by knowing any details about my life. Plus every service I use has padding added to it, following specific rules as well.....so even if I gave out my password to one service it wouldn't get you into any other service and would be hard to guess the password to other services without having multiple samples of different passwords.

Basically an example would be something along the lines of ^^^^^#*****#^^^^^#*****, with stars being part of the base password (the part that has meaning to me), carets being the padding that's different for every service and pound signs representing a standard symbol to break up the password.....obviously that's not exact character length or anything, just an idea of what I do.

This way every service has a unique password (and hashed password, even before a service potentially adds its own salt to the password), and knowing the rules I used to create it makes it very simply to remember the password for each service.

Something like that: v)APDvDTkJTVxQjB4kqZ2ZmcCmhArsPPbaJZb(WhXBDVMbtxsT as i use 1Password to randomly generate all my passwords.

However usually shorter as things like your Microsoft Account are limited to 16 characters for a password.

We're talking about human beings here. A group of flesh lumps that will still happily hand out their credit card details to people on the phone.

You think they'll even think twice about their online passwords?

All my passwords are different for each site i visit, using a six digit number and an event. Combine that with a certain piece of the the sites personal nickname to me and then randomize it. That's how i work out new passwords for sites and how i never forget those passwords. If a hacker figures that all out then they kind of deserve access :p

It really is this easy.. You have scams that will tell you your computer is infected and ask you for your username and password.. This happens A LOT. They will even call people and have them install remote admin tools.. Hacking isn't hard anymore.. just call someone and ask for access.. lol

my password is i3igp3n15

Randomly generated passwords are so overkill...

I beg to differ.

You seem to have odd security practices... Randomly generated passwords are a good idea if you are someone or something that is actively targeted but otherwise overkill. Are you one of the guys promoting that 360 Total Security on here?
