badall
Hi I'm in the process of migrating an organisation to 365 and upgrading there server from sbs2003, it's small organisation at most 23 active users rarely more than 9 or 10 users logged in at the same time. My question is about the user limit in essentials 2012 r2, does the limit mean users logged in at the same time or profiles setup on the server ? Many thanks in advance
Sikh
Specifically says 25 user accounts. So you should be good if you have only 23 active users. http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2012/12/12/using-windows-server-2012-essentials-with-more-than-25-users.aspx
badall
I'm thinking about future expansion if they get new employees etc with SBS 2003 it was OK if you had more users than the cals as long you didn't have more logged in than cals on the server, I know essentials is easily upgraded to standard then you add cals as and when just not sure if now would be best or when it is needed
sc302 Veteran Posted January 20, 2015 Veteran Share Posted January 20, 2015 why not just go to standard then? If you are that close, it doesn't leave you a lot of room for future growth. Praetor 1 Share
daorbed9
why not just go to standard then? If you are that close, it doesn't leave you a lot of room for future growth. 25 users on regular server is about $1150 more.
badall
The are a charity so have access to TT-exchange pricing which is massively discounted
Praetor
Server 2012 Standard is less then 800$, if not mistaken. Also if they are a charity they can get heavy discounts from Microsoft, so again why Essencials since they are so close to the limit? Also Essencials Hyper-V is very limited (only 1 VM and must be Essencials as well) but with Standard, if you have the hardware for it, you can install Hyper-V and use 2 VM with Server 2012 Standard for free, so you can separate stuff. binaryzero
If you go standard, you're paying a fee for the OS as well as a fee for the users in AD. (Which is why you don't go willy nilly creating dummy accounts in an enterprise environment. This comes to bite you in the butt when Microsoft ask you to audit (chance to clean up AD hehe))
