satysin
So how do you feel about the new look to Windows 10 now we have seen the consumer preview? If this is the final look to Windows 10 are you happy with it or not?
Syanide
I'm fine with it on desktop. However on phones, I think moving the controls from the bottom app bar to the hamburger menu (where they're both hidden and hard to reach) is awful. Like, really, really awful. Max Norris
Liking it so far, still premature to call any judgements as it's still a work in progress. Desktop's definitely a bit "friendlier" for sure.
Ironman273
As someone that uses a Surface 3 docked in the office and as a tablet in the field the dual nature of Windows 10 really excites me.
Osiris
Was that the consumer preview, I don't recall them using that terminology during the presentation? I ask because they alluded to new features rolling out over the next one, two and five months so clearly theres still a while to go in the build cycle and they didn't really show much for desktop users. If that was the consumer preview then there will be a lot of disappointed folks who have been holding out for some new UI reveal that isn't coming. If you look at what you get with windows 10 its good value for consumers but if you step back and look at it as a whole its essentially the equivalent of Windows 8 R2 the big difference is perception in consumers minds. techbeck
Looks good so far. And as long as you can turn off the assistance/notification like you currently can, good for me. I have no need for that on my desktop. Start menu may take a little to get used to but at least it isn't the full screen like on Win8 so I am happy with that. That was one of the major complaints from users. Still waiting to get my hands on the new release in the next week or so to render final judgments. chrisj1968
Windows 10 is a reimagined 8/8.1. the icons are flat
Jan Veteran Posted January 21, 2015 Veteran Share Posted January 21, 2015 It's certainly a step in the right direction, however the leaked concept images were (imo) nicer, but there's still plenty of time left so a lot can change. The new Windows Phone UI on the other hand is a mess, however once again it's still extremely early so it's likely to change.
mummyboy
It's bordering on awful. Superficially, the basic UI functional design is ok but overall it's too flat and the way the start menu is more or less indistinct from the main screen is ugly. Moreover, the colors are horrible. Overall, its too heavy feeling and dare I say too masculine. Minimally there should be a variety of preset options for 'lightening' everything up with better palette choices and well, I dont even know. neo1911 and Randolph 2 Share

unklmik
After a few minutes to absorb, I am mildly impressed with new features; sorely disappointed that no specific deadlines for the implementation of anything was given.
Randolph
I understand this is an early build compared to RTM, but they seriously need to do something about the UI. It looks disgusting. Windows 7 is the best UI to date. I seriously hope the RTM looks alot better than this or alot of people will be seriously disappointed.
Defcon
Basically nothing has changed except for some icon and color tweaks. Underneath its still the exact same 8.1.
chrisj1968
what happened? I was just thinking that, I might know where things got messed up. bear with me please. We had Windows XP, for what it was worth, could be customized with customized icons, desktop wallpapers, made to look the way you wanted it to. ditto with Vista and 7. but with 8/8.1.. customizing the UI seems over. Now we are relegated to "HOPING" that MSFT won't screw the pooch by making a lousy looking UI. we are dependant upon MSFT for making an appealling UI. long gone are the days of 3rd party websites who made awesome looking icons and entire themes, face it, the themes now are just desktop pictures.. Pfft! This is truely a problem. there is more artistic ingenuity out there than in all of MSFT. maybe MSFT didn't like that? -who knows? But we are now relegated to allowing MSFT to tell us how our UI will look.
TruckWEB
It's Windows 8.1 with a "better" Start menu (added some intelligence about the device being used), Cortana and some "just okay" new icons. I don't know why, but I was expecting something more/better. The problem that I have is that we learned nothing new in this presentation. Most of it was known from the reveal in September. FiB3R
I wouldn't say I love it, but it is getting better. Also, now that I have my 27" 1440p monitor again, I am finding the current 8.1 start screen far less annoying. Still think it's far too colourful, even though the colours do help you find things faster. 123456789A 1 Share

Because I could give my PC (if it was charged...) a pink theme, a pink background, and basically pinkify it to the point where I'd want to puke, and I wouldn't call that masculine. +Asmodai MVC Posted January 21, 2015 MVC Share Posted January 21, 2015 I'm personally not fond of the aesthetic. The whole "Flat" thing makes sense to me on very small screens (such as phones) as well as on low resolution devices where you only have so many pixels but it falls apart for me when you get to 20"+/1080p+ screens on PCs. I like the "glass" look or gradients and such and I like shading on my icons. The flat icons on a big desktop screen look like something from CGA graphics days or worse to me. It HAS improved a bit with newer icons having more than the 2 or 3 colors they started with (still well within the 16 of CGA though) and transparency support so you can now put a nice wallpaper and see a tinted version of it behind... so that's better than just a solid color but it's still a giant step back from Windows 7 IMHO. Likewise I absolutely hated the all caps menus and they seem to be moving away from that now as well. Again I get the simplistic thing on small screens (no matter the resolution) or low resolution screens (no matter the size) but it just looks bad to me on a normal desktop PC. In any event it's just the aesthetics and I wouldn't buy or not buy an OS based just on that. I do like what I see in features being added and since I didn't go to Win8.x I'll get all the new features that came with as well (the new task manager looks cool) so it's shaping up to be a nice (and free!) upgrade from the Win7 I'm currently running on my (non-touch) desktop and laptop. I actually prefer the flat, more muted UI of Win8/10 to the Aero Glass, glossy look of Win7. Everyone is going to have a different opinion, and Microsoft can't please everyone. Although Windows has always allowed you to patch the uxtheme.dll and run your own themes.
DConnell Member Posted January 22, 2015 Member Share Posted January 22, 2015 I haven't seen any video of the event yet, but I've checked out the reports here. I've seen some pics showing a full-screen start, with the list on the left. I certainly hope that's just an expanded mini-Start and not the new form of the Screen. I don't want any Win95 text menu garbage on my computers! I need to be able to turn that **** off! Anyway, not making any real judgements until I play with the CP. x-byte
Windows 10 is turning out to be a great improvements on Windows 8. Not only the visual, but also the aesthetics. Everything seems to make more sense now, compared to Win 8. The whole problem with WIn8 is that you as a user is constantly breaking the flow of working with an OS. Going desktop only is the best change so far. From what we saw from the event it all now comes together as a cleaner OS. Not like a mess in terms of user behavior. Now you also can choose what type of interface you want which is much better. Forcing the touch interface and behavior on desktop users was a bad decision. I like Win8, but Win 10 is no doubt a massive upgrade. Those who says nothing have changed (even from the TP) should take a closer look. And looking at WP10 and Office 2016, everything is an equal experience. Which is much needed. MS really seems to have nailed it this time. Looking forward to install the CP next week. Quillz
I didn't watch the keynote so maybe I missed it, but on the latest build they were showing off, did they have any "legacy" apps next to Modern apps? I see things like the title bar widgets have changed, has this been brought over to the legacy app windows? Have they fixed the issue Win8 had where using black or dark window chrome was almost impossible since the title bar text was fixed to black?
