Google Don't Be Evil: But are you scared from Google?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

we know the slogan of Google "don't be evil"...

But actually, are you scared from the power that Google have reached?

They scan every moment of the "digital" life of an user to make $$$.

I admit, their service from Android, Gmail, Chrome etc.... are superlative.

But actually, I'm a little doubtful on the future of privacy, because... Google all see... all know!

Are you still using Google services?

Yes.  They all do it to some extent.  And the government is far worse.

I don't think Government is any worse and google are almost the same in terms of disregard for privacy.

What Google does was clearly stated and their policy changes anounced a few years ago were stated ahead of time. If people were so concerned, or afraid of Google, then they wouldnt be doing as well as they are now.  You don't like what Google is doing, there are alternative services just as good.  I see people wine and complain all the time but yet, still use Google.  Vote with your wallet if you are paranoid about it.  I have used Google for a long time and never had an issue with persona/sensitive data being compromised.  Same with any of the other big companies.  Then again, I dont post a lot of personal/sensitive data online regardless of what company I am dealing with.  Its not Google I am concerned with, its people who are out to get your info regardless of what services you use.  And any  company has the ability to view what you do when you use their services.

And here is a big shocker, Google is an ad company and that is where they get most of their revenue.  If people dont know their policy and read what they do before they use their services and then get upset/paranoid...no ones fault but their own.  You are not forced to start or continue to use their services.

For example, in their policy I don't understand this word... they can use my photo and my document for all the purpose that they want?

When you upload, submit, store, send or receive content to or through our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content. The rights you grant in this license are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting, and improving our Services, and to develop new ones.

Many companies have similar sections in their terms since they've had frustrating claims against them.  Consider Flickr for example in that it provides a facility to upload your photos and for other people to see them.

They need the following rights for the reasons:

  • "host / store" - so that they the ability to show your photo when you or others visit the site.
  • "reproduce / publish / publicly display / distribute" - so that they actually have the right to show your photo to you and others.
  • "modify / create derivative works" - so that they have the right to create thumbnails of your photo.
  • "publically perform" - so that they can show your videos to you and others.

Often people claim that the services are claiming *ownership* of your content but I have yet to see such an example.

I see the word limited in there. So, basically you telling us to not use any google services?

When you start to read policies / warranties / disclaimers, if you take them literally you'd never use anything again in your life.

(I, like most people tend to gloss over the small print, so the opinions expressed above are my own and not a general consensus, therefore are liable to be incorrect as well as correct)

All of the services are equally questionable in what they do with your user data, but Google specifically abandoned their creed.

I'm really hoping that Spartan will offer a way out of Chrome. MS may mine the data as much as Google, but I'd prefer it.

If you're scared of Google then you're in for a nasty surprise if you read up on the government.

At the NSA, all the information we collect about you is only used to serve you relevant ads about the Affordable Care Act.

I'm not narcissistic enough to believe that google or the government actually cares about me or what i personally do.

If only i had the type of personality disorder which would lead one to believe that they are special.

You make a really valid point.

Google are not "reading your emails" - they are accumulating data to monitor, predict and monetise trends!
