Why hasn't such a smartwatch been made?

The latest news about the poor battery life of Apple's watch got me thinking... Can't they do something like this:

Take a typical watch, add a transparent LCD screen layer on top of it. When the smart features are not in use, all you get is a real analogue watch. No need for it to be mimicked by an LCD screen, plus it's as realistic as you can get. Then with a touch of a button, the screen comes to life, and the analogue watch layer underneath gets hidden.

This would also eliminate the 'stigma' of wearing a smart watch. To the unsuspecting, it just appears like a typical watch until you press the button.

I know that perhaps there's no space to fit a motor and the components together in the case, but I'm sure it can be done with enough R&D?

Probably the biggest issue is how many transparent LCD screens have you seen exactly? Me? None that I can think of. Plus, the addition of a mechanical watch with a clock face would add serious thickness. Rolexes aren't thin you know.

Let's hope that those are just the early adopter prices, as the tech becomes more mainstream and there's higher adoption hopefully we'll see the price drop.

In all honesty, I see the price being less about the technology used and more about the fact they are just very nice watches.

https://kairoswatches.com/ somewhat fits your description, I think.

most of the photos are mockups. the real transparency is 40% 60% and there is a photo of prototype watch that does not look very nice at all.

imagine only 50% transparency... not very good.

Very nice, but at those prices :(

especially at those prices.

Mainly because the idea of smart watches is being pushed by high-tech consumer goods companies, rather than real watch makers.

I like this which seems to give the best of both worlds.

As much as I like the idea of a smart watch - I like my grown-up 'real' watches much more.
