Windows 10 on a tablet questions

Recommended Posts

I have upgraded my Dell Venue Pro 8 Tablet from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 build 9926, which went really well.

However I'm now unsure if my settings are messed up due to upgrading or if this is actually how Windows 10 currently works on tablets.

I've not really used Windows 10 or kept up with all the changes, so i could quite easily be making some newbie mistakes here. I've figured out i need to swipe right and enable tablet mode in the notification center for everything not to run in a window, however my main issues are currently:

The taskbar is always there - no matter what i do, even watching video the task bar is always on the screen. I can enable auto hide, which hides it when the screen it not been touched, however you then have an annoying blue line across the bottom of the screen showing that the task bar is hiding. Im guessing as the chimes bar is gone this is now by design? :(

The chimes bar is gone - when in an app i always just used to swipe my thumb right to bring the chimes bar up, as the Dell Venue Pro has no buttons at all on the front bezel (better i think) this allowed the chimes bar on screen start button to be pressed and take me to the start screen, or provided easy access to display, Wi-Fi and other settings, WITHOUT leaving the app i was currently in. This now appears to be the notification center which has some chimes bar like settings at the bottom. These are a bit useless as pressing display takes you to the "Modern" control panel, where you can't actually adjust the screen brightness anyway! (i dont think?)

The all apps screen - This is essentially a small menu that appears on the left of the screen you can scroll up and down on from what i gather, is there any way to easily pin all my modern apps back to the start screen from this? other than holding my finger over each one and waiting for the "pin to start" to manually appear. The all apps button is extremely small on an 8 inch tablet often takes multiple attempts to actually press it.

Places, Most Used, Recently Added - Im presuming i cant really do much with these at this point? I'd like to get rid of it personally.

Cycle through running applications - I used to find this really easy just using the thumb on my left hand and swiping right on to the screen. Now this brings up a screen with an add desktop button and a view of running applications i then need to actually go and click on. Can i just not keep swiping as i found that a lot quicker and easier.

Background - I presume i cant currently have a background on the start screen like on Windows 8.1?

Windows 8.1 on a tablet really surprised me, it just worked so well and was so easy to use. I actually ended up liking Windows 8.1 on a tablet more than Android. Windows 10 appears to have currently un-done all this and i feel like im trying to use my desktop PC on a really small 8" screen, which is really getting annoying.

Does any one have any tips on how to make the Windows 10 experience on a tablet better? I'd like to keep using it, however at this point i feel like just submitting feedback and downgrading back to Windows 8.1.

I installed it on my Surface Pro 3 and had similar results.  It's not a feature complete build and aspects of tablet mode and Continuum aren't all turned on.

In many apps you can reach the settings by tapping the hamburger icon at the top left corner, if it's there.

I chose to revert back to Win8.1 because the backlight won't turn off even when the screen if 'off'.  At least, that was case with my install.

The revert process was super easy and really fast, though.  From within Win10 back to Win8.1 took less than five minutes and there is no indication that I even installed 10.

FYI - perhaps a typo, but the 'chimes' bar is actually called 'charms'.

(Win10 is running nicely on my PC, though.)
