Win7 or Win2k12 For Storage/Media Server?

Recommended Posts

If you had a choice of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2012 for use as the OS for a machine that is primarily going to have a raid for storage and to server media via Plex, which would you use?

I am leaning to Win2012, but I am not sure if this would be overkill for what I want to do with the machine, I do have a copy of WHS2011 somewhere, but doubt I will use that, seeing as it only has about another year of support.

If I were to use win2012 would there be any point to using AV on there, or to save money would it be best to download everything to daily use PC, scan it there then send it to server (pretty much what I do now).

Same goes for defrag software, would it to prudent to invest in perfectdisk for server or just use the inbuilt defrag?

Why do you need raid to serve media files?  Seems like a freaking waste of money to me.. What do you think it gets you?  If you say backup.....

If this was storage of user files in an enterprise - OK..  Sounds like your serving up movies to me..  Why in the world would that justify raid, be it software or hardware? What is needed is a pool of space.. You sure an the hell do not need to waste cpu cycles or space on parity for "media files"

I can tell you that win7 does not support smb3 for 1 thing, so if your clients do that would be 1 reason right there to use 2k12 at the basic level.

Freenas. :)

Not an option as I require a Windows OS for 3D apps, none of which work that great under wine

That is why I am asking here, I can always change my mind based off of the information I get in the posts here.

Would you suggest Storage Pools (inbuilt) or StableBit Drive Pool? I have stablebit

There are clearly advantages to stablebit ;)  If you already have it!  Yeah just use that!!  When I move my PC to windows 10, I will for sure update my nas vm that is currently running windows 7 just to get smb3 support.

Rgr.  Sorry...thought you were just looking for a raid server w/ Plex.  :)
