Amazon UK drops the price of its failed Fire Phone by 75% - but only for today

Even the most optimistic tech fan would struggle to categorize Amazon's first smartphone as anything other than a disaster. Indeed, the company managed to get just about everything wrong with the device: its flawed UI, the exclusivity deal with AT&T, and a high price tag for its specs, which included sub-flagship features such as a 720p display, rather than a Full HD one.

Amazon repeated its mistakes when it launched the device in the UK, making it exclusively available on O2, and pricing it higher than many other genuine flagship-class handsets. Amusingly, its UK launch came just one day after a widely publicized price drop for the Fire Phone in the US, making the device an even less appealing prospect for those expected to pay 'full price' for it in the UK.

But for UK shoppers who are still interested in the Fire Phone, there's good news today, as Amazon has slashed the price of the handset for one day only.

Today, you can pick up the 32GB Fire Phone for just £99 off-contract, saving you £300 off the regular price. The 64GB model gets £330 off, and is available today for £149. However, be aware that the handset will be locked to the O2 UK network.

With a quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera, the Fire Phone may well prove to be more appealing with these deep discounts applied. At full price, though, the device was a flop - in its first three weeks on sale, it's believed that just 35,000 units were sold, and Amazon later took a $170 million write-down on costs related to the device.
