Comcast apologizes for changing customer's billing name to profanity

Recommended Posts

You know they may be thinking it about you, when you're arguing with a customer service representative.

But it's a stretch when you actually see it in writing: "A**hole".

That's what happened to a Spokane, Washington couple after they sparred about their bill with a customer service representative from Comcast. When Ricardo and Lisa Brown got their monthly service bill, the husband's name had been changed from Ricardo Brown to "A**hole Brown."

To make matters worse, Lisa Brown met resistance trying to get the profanity removed and the billing name corrected. That's when she reached out to a consumer advocacy writer, Christopher Elliott, who writes on travel and consumer affairs for The Washington Post, USA Today and other other publications. The Brown's Comcast saga was first reported in Elliott.org.

"You know employees talk about customers behind their back and say things like this," Elliott told CBS News. "But I've never seen anyone put something like this in writing. This falls into the category of 'What were they thinking?'"

I'm sure someone will get reprimanded or fired for this. I have a difficult time seeing this as an inadvertant(spelling?) accident.

Kinda makes you think what they said to make the person so angry on the other end that they would do that.  Not saying they deserve it, but they made somebody unhappy enough to do this.

Rep probably makes money on convincing them to remain a customer.

This guy must have been a bad enough a-hole to the Billing Rep to get them to do this lol.

Obviously we don't have the whole story, and what happened here is pretty bad. But as someone who has worked in customer support before, I have dealt with my fair share of a-holes, ones that immediately lay it on you and you just have to take it, even if you aren't the one at fault. It really must suck be a CS agent at Comcast, mainly because you really could be a good person and try to help the customer, but with Comcast's rep, you will be at fault no matter what you do

As someone who is self employed I can relate to getting ######. Although I would never send a bill out calling them an ######, but you do get ######.

One time a customer called me at 8:30pm.

He said and I quote "Can you repair it now or do I have to call someone else". I should have said ..."Sure, call someone else, good luck with that at 8:30pm".

I did fix him remotely though...

Lets just say 1 year later Carma caught up with him.

Comcast is one of the most despicable companies in the US, and because they essentially bribe cities with "deals" they have a monopoly in many service areas. That's why we cut the cord.

We now do just fine using an antenna (25+ HD over the air channels here), Netflix, HULU+, an occasional Amazon PPV and soon a HBO streaming account. Our non-PPV outlay still won't be 1/4 of what our Comcast used to be.

Hey now, Comcast will get better and be less monopolistic when they buy TWC! When they have control of Universal Pictures, Universal Theme parks, NBC Studios, Various regional sports networks, over 30% of the countries internet provider availability, Almost all the old Adelphia territory that they gave to TWC when they took over Adelphia, NaviSite, Insight Communications, one they get all that done they will have no reason to be a controlling meanie anymore!

Now I here she is requesting money back for everything she paid, and 2 years of free service! Now that is what I call selfish and greedy.

Not sure how the topic got from a rep at a company doing something bad, to talking about certain body parts.  But ok then....

Isn't that what the Internet is for?

Agreed but, grant her request, and have the rep who made the name change pay for it all, in payments if need be. Guaranteed it never happens again. They know who did it, there would be a paper trail.

Of course, they won't do any more than they have to, but it would be nice.

No that is what Comcast offered her to make up for the issue.
