Recommended Posts

AOL is shutting down Joystiq and popular MMO sister site Massively. A report earlier in the day fromTechcrunch indicated that parent company AOL planned on rolling the Joystiq brand back into tech site Engadget.

The news was confirmed today by Massively editor-in-chief Brianna Royce (in this blog post) and in a tweet from Joystiq News Content Director Alexander Sliwinski.

In his tweet, Sliwinski shared a LinkedIn staff list:

The Joystiq layoffs affect 13 staffers including Susan Arendt, Anthony John Agnello, Thomas Schulenberg, Xav de Matos Sam Prell, Earnest Cavalli, Mike Suszek, Danny Cowan, Sinan Kubba, Ludwig Kietzmann, Jess Conditt, Alexander Sliwinski, and Richard Mitchell. Massively employees affected by today's news include Bree Royce, Jef Reahard, Justin Olivetti, Mike Foster, Larry Everett, MJ Guthrie and Eliot Lefebvre.

Royce wrote in a Massively post today that her last day of work at the site will be February 3.

Popular World of Warcaft site Wow Insider will also be shutting down. According to WoW Insider'sAlex Ziebart, ten people will be affected by the shutdown: Alex Ziebart, Adam Koebel, Adam Holisky, Alex Ziebart, Anne Stickney, Dan O'Halloran, Elizabeth Harper, Elizabeth Wachowski, Matthew Rossi, and Scott Andrews.

We offer our sincerest condolences to all those Joystiq. WoW Insider, and Massively employees affected by these layoffs and sincerely hope all of these talented people (many of whom we know personally) find full time employment as soon as possible.

Ultimately today is a very dark day for the gaming community because we have lost two incredibly strong voices in Joystiq and Massively.

Hmm I used to surf Joystiq simply because I didn't know any other gaming news sites. Besides it was easy to browse without too many nonsensical navigational aspects.

Shame about the jobs. Hope everyone lands on their feet.

Anyone got any other sites?

Ugh, damn you AOL. I mean I know web sites can't live forever (though they kinda do with the web archive) but still, Joystiq and Massively were awesome sites.

Now I'm down to Giantbomb, Gamespot and to some extent the new wave of Youtubers like Kinda Funny (Games) and Jim Sterling etc.

Freaking Inside Gaming's crew (Adam Kovic and company) just announced they are leaving Machinima as well. Bad week for us gamers I guess.

AOL, an aging relic...

WoW insider was a great website, and I always had no reservations visiting joystiq.

If you want one that doesn't spit on it's audience, insult them, and slander them I'd recommend taking a look at techraptor.net

AOL is more of an un-focused collection of internet stuff, with out a strong central brand.

Kinda like Yahoo, until recently where the ex-google executive, now CEO, is trying to change.
