Hyper-V Help

Here is the scenario

I have a VM on Server 2008.

This VM has 2 partitions on it C: and D:

D: only has a small amount of space left.

Goal:

I want to make D: larger

Solution?

I have a 1TB physical drive in the server that is unused and I would like to use that and expand this D: partition on to it. Is this possible? If not, how do I go about growing the D: partition?

Thanks Neowin community.

Firstly, if you move the VHD of your "D Drive" to the spare physical drive and then using the settings for the VM, browse to the new VHD location.

Once in the new location, in the file menu on the right hand side of Hyper V manager (with your VM selected) there should be an option to "Edit Disk", use the browse button to locate your new VHD on the new 1TB drive and then choose the expand option to whatever size you then require.

Also after this is complete, via the VM, make sure you expand the disk from the guest OS in disk management.

Sorry its E: not D: but thats irrelavant. Perhaps I should be more clear. My VHD is a single VM (not comprised of 2)

I have attached three screenshots.

VM disk Usage shows "My Computer" when in the VM - as you can see, E:\Data is in need of increasing

Host Image is Disk Mgmt from the Host server. The VHD is on C:\ and as you can see there is the 1TB drive I can use.

Third Image is the current size of the VHD.

If i understand you correctly:

1) Shut down VM (seems obvious I know)

2) Move VHD to 1TB drive

3) In HyperV Mgr point disk to new location of VHD

4) Expanding size is fine but how does this increase the size of E:\Data

If I'm understanding you correctly, once the VHD has been moved, expanded etc.

You will need to open up Disk Management from within the Virtual Machine, you should then see an option to expand the partition.
