[Help] Windows 8.1 System Image Recovery cannot find image.

I am trying to help out a friend with restoring an image he took of his computer. He placed the image on an external drive and when running the Windows System Image Recovery tool it says it cannot find any recovery images.

 

I have placed the "WindowsImageBackup" directory in the main directory of an external drive. it contains all of the backup data. the computer can see that drive because when we select the install driver button we can navigate to the external drive and see the data on it.

 

Any ideas as to why the Image recovery tool cannot see the data.

If you cancel the dialog box in the restore wizard you should get an option to browse for the image files.

that brings up the list of previous backups, however the list is empty, and the only options it gives us is to look for a network location or install a drive. it still wont work via the external drive or even know it exists.

Yeah something doesn't sound right, are you booting up with the DVD, you should be able to just browse to the image file.

no we are using the contol panel link and it reboots the computer, we go into advanced and then into the Image recovery tool.
