Recommended Posts

Okay I have an XB1 and want to replace the measly HDD. How can I not only swap it out, but also transfer games, saves etc to the new drive? Thanks!

You can't replace the internal hard drive but you can attach external usb drives to the xbox

Sorry, should have added that I found out how to replace it last night. Just need to know how to copy games and stuff. Didn't post it because I heard you can get banned from XBL. Is that true?

Sounds like fear porn.

It probably "voids" your warranty but I somehow doubt that bans go out. You should search for proper forums that deal with this.

I found this after a quick search

Thanks for the video. Really appreciate it. It helped me a lot! This works as of 25th November 2014. Please note, factory reset stock HDD in the Xbox ONE before commencing the instructions in this video for it to work 100%.?

Ok Here is exactly how I did it: with this method you dont need to have the original drive. but your console must be updated to the latest dashboard revision!! We use the sudo command because you must be root for this to work. ;) Also unplug every drive in your PC except the one you wish to hack. and the USB you will use to boot into Linux.

1. On my X1 I reset to factory defaults

2. On the setup screen I just unplugged the power cord to turn the X1 off.

3. (the fun part) Go on your PC and download the OSUDT2 Files from this site :http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/system/offline-system-update-diagnostic-tool

4. Make two folders on your desktop called 'A' & 'B' and place all files except updater.xvd in both the folders. updater.xvd stays outside the two folders.

5. Take the files mentioned above and put on a USB stick also place Juvenals xboxonemasterhdd.zip on the USB aswell. (different from the one used to boot Linux)

6. Boot into linux and try Ubuntu

7. Open Terminal

go to cd 'drag and drop the zip so you are in the correct working directory' Ex cd desktop/xboxonemasterhdd/

8. First command type 'sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py' followed by the device, if you cant find this go to the disks application and look next to dev/ sdc<-- this is your device name.

9 So the cmd would be sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdc

10. It will create a file named mkxboxfs.sh this is a shell script.

11. now type 'sudo bash ./mkxboxfs.sh sdc (rememder the device name)' it will create 5 partitions you can watch them be created in the disks app.

12. Now we need to add the OSUDT2 files from your USB. Make sure the System Update partition is mounted and open it. Place the folders A & B, and updater.xvd in the partitions its the EASY.

13. Now unmount all the partitions. But not the USB drive to boot linux.

14. Run the first script again. type 'sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py'

15. type yes in the next prompt and hit enter.

16. Put into X1, it should boot to the setup screen because you restored your console in step 1. Fill out your info and you are good to go. No black screen or updating required. Boots fine with no issues. So dont fret and Read Up!

I hope this helps to everyone who had trouble understanding this video. Works EVERYTIME! Thanks Brian Williams for the tut in the first place couldnt do this without you! & juvenal1.?

I guess you can backup your games and stuff to an external before hand?

You can't get banned from Live for using external hard drive.  Xbox was designed for External drives.

You can get banned by trying to "crack the code" and not pay for things...

Just by any External HDD 26GB USB 3.0 (USB 3.0 is mandatory) plug it into one of the USB ports... Format the drive, and your good.

Just go to games and apps pick a game hit men and there should be a transfer option.

I got a 4TB WD drive (3.72TB after formatting) on my Xbox One.  Got over 20games (big and small) on it and still go 3.5TB of Hard drive space left...

No problem...

Make sure you check out some other sources which have concrete details on how to format and if there are any other considerations that have to be taken into account.

i.e. if people really get banned because of increasing the HDD size

but like I mentioned before I think these are the same people that do not know where the oil and windshield wiper fluid go.

I don't understand why the crap you would go to such lengths when you can just plug in an external hard drive over USB3 which'll give you performance improvements too compared to SATA2 and 5300 RPM. Just baffling.

you could get banned for replacing the HDD in the system, but I have not heard of anyone getting banned though. It does void your warranty though as the system was designed for it not to be swapped out like the 360 drives

Why wouldn't you just use an external drive?  Much easier and works great if you get a 7200RPM drive.

What code?

Cheatng, like trying to side load games, or anything that tries to go around rules and regulations...

"Crack the Code" just sounded cool in my head...  :punk:

Formatting a drive has nothing to do with running non signed content or trying to cheat. ;)

Didn't think that was even possible on the Xbox One?!

Why would it matter?

Some people have money to blow. .. put a  1TB SSD  MLC 3D V-NAND SATA III drive into a SATA II port.

Then put gold platting on the drive...

Would the gold platted case also void warranty ... no need to answer that.

Some others just want a bigger drive because 500GB is not much.

the OP said that he read somewhere that using external drive may get you banned...

and I told him using external drive wont get him banned.  Trying to do something outside of Microsoft's rules/regulations will get you banned...

OP wanted to change his internal drive. Can't believe everything that one reads on the internet.. so concrete facts are needed.

Neowin wouldn't exist without "doing something outside of MS rules and regulations".

Maybe the OP wasn't aware that using an external drive is a better option than opening up the console.  Maybe he wants to take the console apart and mess with it, in which case that would be the answer to my post and it's just fine.

However, there's nothing wrong suggesting a different solution than what the OP is requesting.  He may not be aware of what different options he has.

Suggesting an external drive is fine but OP did most likely search for the iFixIt article on how to take apart the console.

If you search for this type of article then the first 5 articles that come up will be suggestions on using the external drive.

Probability is very high that OP indeed saw this and proceeded with whatever his initial plan was.

Lol, I love you guys I swear. But I've decided to get an external drive because I want to use it as my media server as well. I keep my desktop on all the time and the difference it makes in my light bill is about $100 a month. I want to turn off my desktop and stream movies and music from my external HDD connected to the XB1.

So now I'm on the hunt for a good external HDD and can't decided if 2TB or 4TB is the road to go. Any experience?
