Apple may be about to take on Google with its own search engine

Recommended Posts

I don't have the usage statistics, but isn't Google still the most used search engine? Not that that means anything, but here's hoping that if this is true then Apple will take some tips from Bing's slightly bumpy beginnings. Unless they are just talking about putting more in to Spotlight, in which case I'm not sure you can draw a comparison between that and Google.

Although with everything being connected to the Internet these days, who's to say that the latest search enginges shouldn't be indexing your files as well as Internet search results?

Apple have a big advantage over Microsoft and Bing in that they could set the default search engine on all their new iPhone/iPads/iPods/Macs to Apple Search and immediately have a larger market share than Bing does.

Apple need to take cues from both google and Bing. It doesn't have to be full of pretty colors to make people switch (bing, at least in the beginning), but it does have to have extremely relevant topics when it brings back results (google).

Hmmm. I don't know.... It's up to them reallly... I don't possess all the info they do, but it won't be something easy. Google has a hell of algorithm they've been improving for over 15 years.

The biggest problem with this idea, if it were true, is it that it will take a long time - Bing for example has only just started to take the idea of catering for more than just the US user base by hiring some international employees to improve their international offerings. As much as I'd like to see another option in the search space I also have to be realistic regarding the success given that even Microsoft, with all its money and expertise, has struggled against Google.

Locking iOS and OS X into a limited, proprietary search engine might be one of the most self-harming moves Apple could make at this point. It would make Apple Maps look a success by comparison.

I suspect Apple Search is some kind of in-house wrapper to combine Bing with some other technology Apple has developed. Alternatively it may just be the team that handles the engineering for its existing search technologies (e.g. Spotlight) goes by Apple Search.

Well the bigger question will be if Apple does have a search engine will they lock you to it. The reason I ask, is that in Bings case, I would be curious how many users on IE or Windows Phone switched their default search to Google. Apple obviously with iOS and OS X can easily overtake Bing or even Googles usage, but if users just switch back to Google, whats the point and I would suspect many users would go back to Google because thats what is comfortable. Locking users to Apple search is probably a big breach in monopoly powers though.

in my opinion, most average iphone and mac users will use the default search (unless the results will be terrible, they will just use whatever safari gives them)

however if the apple will lock you, there will be a crapstorm from powerusers.     so i think they will just change the default search in the next update and enjoy massive marketshare.

I really wish Apple would have taken a moment to ask themselves one simple question: do people need or want another search engine?  They would have immediately noticed that the answer to that is a resounding NO.  Hope they fall flat on their faces with this pointless venture.

Yeah, they succeed very nicely with their own maps, so this will overtake google too... /s

well, their maps are better now.    but if they mess up as much, in the beginning,  everyone will switch and not want to come back.

it's always better to have more competition.   if they were not,  google would not try so hard to improve, and would just shove even more ads at us.

I want another search engine, Google filters their results, but Bing and DuckDuckGo make me dig to find what I want, so yeah I do want another search engine.

If it's better, I switch.

I try bing off and on, but the way I search based on key words, Google provides better results.

I remember the earlier part of this decade, we had Cuil, which used an entirely different search algorithm. It was interesting, but its market share never picked up and it shut down after a couple of years.

Yahoo is locked to Bing until 2020 https://www.neowin.net/news/a-bad-code-update-took-down-bing-and-yahoo-search-engines if Apple are smart they will buy and rebrand an existing service. Microsoft has Bing and Google has, er well.. Google for its products, it's not far fetched to see that Apple wants the same thing.

Most search services rely on you being logged in and using it for relevant search results, which is why Bing sucks for me because I default to Google for my searches and usually find what I want on the first page of results. Not so with Bing in my few times of using it. (Even trying to be really accurate, like with a 1:1 news title for example).

Apple is horrible whenever it comes to web services. All of their stuff (iTunes, App Store, iCloud, ...) is slow and surprisingly limited in features.

A search engine from Apple? It wouldn't stand a chance.

Do you we really need more of anything? NO, but competition is good. It would of course take a long time to over take Google, it would only take them all of 5 minutes to over take Bing, Yahoo and all of the other rubbish which in my opinion give Google absolutely no competition what so ever.. Apple doesn't take a back seat in anything they do so they will be heading straight for Google, and Google really needs some serious competition.

You must be really young, because we had lots of search engines prior to Google, Lycos being the most popular one at the time if I remember correctly, then there was Alta Vista, and a number of others, of course you had your searchable directories embedded into most of the search engines sites, Yahoo's being the most popular at the time.
