Apple Seeds First OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite Beta to Developers With Mac Photos App

Apple today seeded the first beta of OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite to developers, just over a week after releasing OS X 10.10.2 to the public. OS X 10.10.3 includes the much anticipated Photos app for Mac.

The new beta is available through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store and should be available in the Mac Dev Center soon.

Recent rumors questioned the removal of mentions of the Photos app for Mac from Apple's website, suggesting it might be delayed, but today's beta release indicates that it is still on track for an early 2015 launch.

Interesting fact about the Photos app: It's using a new framework called UXkit

As for its functionality - I find it easy to use and more than adequate for simple image edits. For a beta it's pretty well done.

Coming from Aperture it's a disappointment and as for file size ugh - Aperture with 1000 raw files is 1.8gb but Photos is 5.9gb. Also cpu runs at 50% even after face detection which btw was awful. And once closed it doesn't remember any of the faces it previously detected so another 30 mins to very poorly detect "faces" again.

I don't think it is necessarily fair to bash the app just because of these small issues. This is the first, of what will probably be many, betas to be released and as Apple gets feedback on the beta, it'll surely continue to improve the app (even outside of normal bugs such as the CPU and face detection issues).

I did a simple Face Detection test with iPhoto and Photos and iPhoto blows the beta away with detecting faces, so it has to be that this is just because of it being in beta right now. I can't imagine, or at least really hope, that Apple wouldn't ship this anywhere near the state it is currently in.

Is it possible to disable things like 'face detection'? I'd prefer that I had control over how my photos are organised rather than the a programmer in some far flung location thinking they know what is best for me.

Oh wow. Do certain people still complain about unexpected behaviour in beta software?

The meaning of the term 'beta software' has long been forgot. See also the long list of complaints about the Windows 10 technical preview.

We can thank Google and their overuse of the 'beta' moniker for this.

Haha wow you must not come to these forums much. I'd explain how users feel about the dumbing down of software but I suspect you're not that interested.

I tend to limit my time here yeah. Dumbing down of software is a different discussion altogether and has nothing to do with complaining about bugs in beta software.

You honestly think grown ups cannot discuss both ?

This thread isn't the place to discuss your mental capabilities. Anyway, let's move on.
