50MP Canon EOS 5DS and 5DS R offer maxed-out resolution

Recommended Posts

Man my pc can barely handle 24mp without a fart or two

After sticking with ~20MP for more than seven years, Canon has unveiled the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R, both of which offer 50.6MP full-frame sensors inside virtually the same body as the EOS 5D Mark III. The effect of the EOS 5DS R's low pass filter has been cancelled out for greater detail resolution, but aside from that difference the two cameras are identical. Like the EOS 5D III the new cameras offer 1080/30p video but do not feature headphone jacks or clean HDMI out.

Each uses dual DIGIC 6 processors, a 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points and a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with 252 zones. The EOS 5DS and 5DS R are capable of 1080/30p HD video recording and offer dual SD/CF card slots. The cameras will be available in June 2015. The Canon EOS 5DS will sell for $3699 body-only; the EOS 5DS R will sell for $3899 body-only.

forgot to add to first post, this feature I wish my nikon and cellphone had :

New

Flicker Synchronization

As expected, the 5DS is a full-frame camera that adds the new features first seen in the 7D Mark II, namely the ability to shoot through flickering light by synchronizing the actual instant of shutter release to the lighting automatically.

Nice feature.

Movie creators/photographers will go after this.

I wish my camera has it...

[grabs my lame-ass nikon camera and throw it to the wall]

How much MB is a picture taken with 50MP? :s

no idea, d600 with 24mp, taken in  color/bright scene for me, yields about 19mb in RAW... the d800 around 32m b.. Though i'm not familiar with canon processing algorithm. My guess would be around 45ish ... now imagine you take 300 photos per outing..  that's 15,000mb worth of processing... enough to make any modern i7 with 16gb of ram cripple... (Processing raw obviously)

about 10MB according to this article:

http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/19/oppo-find-7-50mp-camera/

lol sensor size... sheah right... that's basically 13mp extrapolated, akin to the 808 pureview 40something

I noticed this part from the article:

and then it automatically picks four best shots to combine them into a 50-megapixel still. Our 8,160 x 6,120 sample shots ended up being around 10MB large each, and as you can see above

:p

So I have no idea exactly, seriously.

I mean the DSLR is becoming an "all for everyone tool." DSLR's with HD video. I'd suggest getting a HD or a 4K video camera for your needs. DSLR's used to be strictly for artistic photography.

The 5D MarkII I have has HD video on it but it doesn't serve a good purpose. they raise the price due to all the extra features of HDMI video and higher DEF video. As a photographer, I see those things as gimmicks. I've seen a price listed on B&H I think it was for $3,899. the 5D MarkIII has only been out for a couple or three years.

The 5D MarkII was the top of the line from about 2007/08'ish until the 5D MarkIII came out. the 50.6MP resolution was just to challenge Nikons 36MP DSLR.

a piece of advice for all who want to be photographers: the expensive camera doesn't make one a photographer, the persons skills do. read books, speak to pros and learn all you can.

You are complaining that Canon can only make money by making new cameras?

Well duhhhh, they have to continue refining their products. Should they still be selling these?

You do realize it's just an added function that every other camera manufacturer has?

Agree it was only to compete with nikons... it seems after a brief 24mp pause, we are back in the mp race.

Thanks :)

Yeah, but according to the report it's actually a 13MP camera, it's the software that makes it 50MP. Don't if that is a accurate size measurement :)

It's not that a 3 or 5MB picture is that much, but 20, 30 or 50 MB that's a WOW when you take a dozen or more of them and then you USB it to a PC :)

I know... I was messing with you...  Since I have no idea...  Maybe someone else will give you the answer if they have their picture taken in that size.

My current camera has 12 or 13MP... It has been awhile since I have used it. My photos are in the digital lab thread including the last few years.

hmmm I never usually jump to next iteration

Neither do I, but this one seems to have enough over the T5i for me to want to upgrade.  It doesn't seem like it's just a very minor upgrade like the T5i was to the T4i.  My last upgrade was from the T1i to the T5i.  The T5i also seems to have pretty good resell value still so it won't cost me much to upgrade.
