Should Microsoft launch a "Mayday"-like service?

Recommended Posts

So, if anyone hasn't use Kindle Fire HDX, Amazon provide a service call "Mayday" which is a remote desktop type help service.

Microsoft can easily do the same thing.

If there's a screen flickering problem, it's probably easier to have to remote technician update the video card driver than to tell grandma to update the driver over the phone.

Here's a commercial:

Nope.  Sorry but Amazon can offer this because they supply the hardware.

So what?

You want grandma to return a computer because she can't figure out how to update a video card driver?

Remote Assistance?

Yes, but directly from Microsoft. (To users with genuine copies of Windows, obviously)

Than that Grandma should call Dell\HP\Etc.

That's what I used to think, but knowing how lousy OEM's customer services are, I no longer believe that.

There are many local PC stores in USA. They are happy to help you out.. no matter what the problem is if you can't find anyone who help you via remote assistance.

Not sure if local PC stores available outside of USA.

No need to call the companies for help such as Dell, Gateway, etc.

What I am trying to say is that Microsoft should put out a service like this to humanized the company.

It's irrelevant if grandma can take her computer elsewhere.

Don't forget that Grandma has son or grandson who would help her out by picking the PC up and take it to the store for repair.

Since Windows 8, the reset/restore is easier for grandmas to do... Very simple walk through.

I rather not have something like "mayday" integrated in windows os. It opens up the doors for hackers\phishers\etc.

Remote desktop\remote assistance is already on Windows.

I cannot see why this service can't use the existing backends.

Not a good use of resources unless they charge money for it.

It could be included as part of the Windows license for the length of the mainstream support.

For example, Windows 8 might not have gotten such a bad reputation of everyone can call tech support and ask how the new Windows work.

Microsoft use money for more useless things anyway: http://techcrunch.com/2015/02/04/microsoft-sunrise/#DHhqrq:sul

Microsoft is a business, not a charity..

I never said that it is going to be free.  It could be included as part of the Windows license for the length of the mainstream support.

EXAMPLES

Customer: "Oh, hi.  I am new to Windows 8.  Where did the start menu go?"

Microsoft rep: "No problem. I will be more than glad to show you."

OR

Customer: "Oh, hi.  I am new to Windows 8.  How do I use the new Start Screen?"

Microsoft rep: "No problem. I will be more than glad to show you."

I put in a issue to the hp site, next day a part shows up at my door and a tech is dispatched at 9am. All I said is it wasn't getting power and I have a mobo and new power supply installed while I bsed and had coffee. Business class machines are the way to go.

Supporting different tablet\desktop\laptop oem  configureation and than whitebox configurations is pretty rough. Amazon mayday supports a few different devices and configurations.  I can only see a service like this working if its a yearly subscription, something like applecare.

And I'm sure no one would complain if Microsoft raised the price of the software to cover such a service, right?

There are books/videos on how to use the PC or where the said item go... such as start menu/start screen..

MS is not going to waste their time to show them where they are..   That's the reason we have books, videos, classes, etc for that.

It's definitely possible. Maybe Microsoft can sell it as technical support package.

People are inherently too lazy to learn new things. That's why so many people won't use Windows 8.

Don't forget that people hate changes when from 3.1 to '95... then once they are on '95, they hate changes when they see the XP... Same reason for the next version...

People will get over it.

There are many ways to learn... books, videos, classes, friend/family, etc.

They will go to Windows 8.x or 10 within 5 years if they are on Vista, 7 now.

Clippy could have solved either problem.

Customer: Where did the start menu go?

Clippy: It looks like you are trying to start a program. Can I help you?
