Problems with 2015 Random Funny Pictures Thread

Recommended Posts

Yeah I'm going to switch browsers so I can view one thread in one forum. In case you didn't notice that's sarcasm

Firefox has always been better than Chrome in my opinion.

Plus, you are asking for too much, as splitting the thread will definitely cause less activity in those threads.

yeah, the thread have already lost many of the contributers before due to changes.   do not make the other regulars like me and lime, just give up and stop posting on here.

or, you will basically have 2 threads with barely anyone posting in either of them.

at least now, it is back to being a reasonably active thread, but it can change very fast.    look at how dead (and lame) the jokes subforum is.

Some pages are an exception due to some gifs being between 20 and 50mb for a single one :/ Sorry, but no browser will be able to cope with that until it's downloaded, even gif delay stutters the smaller gifs on the same page.

Don't sound so gloom, gifs are your friends.

Even without gifs Chrome would probably lag in the Picture Thread.

some gifs seem to take forever to load, but they don't bring chrome to  halt?  haven't had an issue with chrome, ie or opera(chromium). Giffs loading is one thing, browser slowing down is another.

This is what I do for that thread (using Firefox)...

-open up the thread

-it takes time and loads

-wait 10 seconds or whatever or do something else

-come back, it's loaded

-open next page in new tab (middle click) so it loads while you're browsing current page

-once you're done the next page will be loaded

-once moved onto the next page, open the next page in new tab

Keep the vicious cycle going and you shouldn't have to wait. :D

pretty much best advice and what  I normally do :p

A GIF is still a picture, it's just moving.

You know that the term "Movie" came from "Moving Picture".

When a Picture is "moving" it is no longer a picture and is by definition a "movie".

Happens to me all the time. I think its the filesizes of the .gifs tbh.
Im hoping in a future forum update we can have .webm, as they allow for far better compression and faster loading.

The extension .gif is also a a method to save a picture (though why one would choose to save an image in such a poor quality is beyond me)

:p

Is this something specific to desktop pc's? I'm currently using chrome 40.0.2214 on a now (2 almost 3) year old sg note 10.1 and haven't noticed any slowdown or pausing of gifs.....

There is a simple solution to this: Stop posting large .gif files. They're a pain in the rear, particularly when you're on a mobile connection.

I'm having a small issue with Firefox. For some reason I can't right click on an image to save. Right click acts as left click, then I have to use the save option at the bottom of the pop up image, which then opens in a new tab for me to right click and save. It's very annoying.

thing is another site I run we have a crazy pics thread and a gif factory thread

Your site probably has a completely different userbase, so it works. Whereas it wouldn't on Neowin because a lot of us would not be willing to put in the extra effort just to keep the few members that are having problems with gifs happy.

All I can suggest for those members is to try one or more of the following solutions:

1) Use extensions to toggle gifs. (Some of which have been mentioned in this thread)

2) Enable this if you are a Chrome user.

3) Use a different browser.

4) This last solution may seem harsh: Find somewhere else for your image viewing pleasure, as the majority of images posted in the Picture Thread nowadays are gifs because of Imgur's gif movement & Neowin's policy on images containing no swearing.

Then don't look at gifs when on mobile. Look at them when you get on Wi-Fi. I have no plm when on LTE network.

So the AMPAS has it wrong when they award a "best picture" of the year?  And the Golden Globes for "best motion picture"?   ;)   :p

Chrome with #impl-side-painting enabled as advised works far better, make the thread workable now.

Yeah, actually, I think AMPAS are wrong lol.  "Best Motion Picture" is correct, though.

If someone comes up to you and says "I'm taking a picture", what do you think they're doing? Or, if someone shows you a funny video on YouTube do you say, "that was a good picture". No, because that's obviously wrong. You could say that was a good moving picture, but they'd look at you with a tilted head.

Personally I think, as it's a prestigious award, they figured "Best Picture" sounds better than "Best Movie".

Best Film.   Sounds classy and solves the problem.   Calling it a picture is a bit strange, even if everyone knows they mean motion picture.

I'm so glad we have. as humans, persistence of vision. Can you imagine if we were like pigeons. No Cinemas, no PornHub, no YouTube. A sad world that would be.

I agree.  I say, "Did you see that movie" or "Wasn't that a great movie?"
